342 Earthquakes at El Hierro Island (Canary Islands) During March 2014

The month of March 2014 saw 342 earthquakes at El Hierro in the Canary Islands; recorded at 27.1 N / 18.5 W – 28.1 N / 17.5 W. This number of earthquakes is up 279 from February of this year. The number is down however, when compared to March of 2013 which had 175 more earthquakes. Last year, March had a total of 517 earthquakes for the month.

March 2014 certainly had its own uptick from the 18th to the 20th, however. The total number of events for those three days was 302; the most active day being the 16th with 160 earthquakes.

According to the Instituto Geographico Nacional there have been over 400 events since Jan 10, 2014, as can be seen in the image above. 

The March activity brought the year’s total to 411. Although the activity slowed down at the end of March 2014, the area is still active and will be monitored closely.
