'You all just got a lot richer': What Trump bragged to wealthy friends at Mar-a-Lago just hours after signing tax bill he said would benefit the middle class

Donald Trump was in a jolly mood at dinner on Friday night, with CBS News reporting that the Commander-in-Chief spent part of his evening extolling the benefits of the new tax bill to friends at Mar-a-Lago.

‘You all just got a lot richer,’ President Trump told a group of diners at a nearby table according to two people at the Palm Beach club that night. 

It is unclear if the diners were members or guests at the club, which charges a $200,000 initiation fee and $14,000 in annual dues.

President Trump made that statement despite his repeated insistence that the new $1.5 trillion tax overhaul was created to benefit middle class Americans.

Under the new bill, almost all Americans will see their taxes go down next year, but many critics feel that the wealthiest citizens benefit the most and at a disproportionate rate.

President Trump has claimed the tax bill is ‘not good’ for him personally, but his refusal to release his past tax returns makes that statement impossible to confirm or deny.

The New York Times estimated that Trump would have saved $11 million o his 2005 tax bill  based on this plan, the one year for which one of his returns was leaked earlier this year.

He would also have saved an additional $4.4 million on his estate tax bill.  

Back in September he said: ‘The rich will not be gaining at all with this plan. We are looking for the middle class and we are looking for jobs — jobs being the economy.’

And earlier in the day on Friday President Trump had told reporters: ‘I consider this very much a bill for the middle class and a bill for jobs.’

The passage of the bill is Trump’s biggest accomplishment as he wraps up his first year in the Oval Office.

The news of his boasting managed to anger Democrats, with Senator Chuck Schumer tweeting: ‘@realDonaldTrump’s Christmas Eve pronouncement from Mar-a-Lago: Santa to the Rich, Scrooge to the poor.’ 

And Senator Bernie Sanders wrote: ‘At least Trump is finally telling the truth about his tax bill.’ 

Trump has yet to respond to the CBS News report, though he has been active on Twitter this Christmas Eve.

He is spending the holiday at Mar-a-Lago with his wife Melania and at least four of his five children.

Donald Jr., Eric, Tiffany and Barron have all been spotted at the club over the weekend.
