The High Stake Gamble

That old saying “It takes two to tango” is relevant today. The State of The Union address must point out both Ukraine’s and Russia’s Presidents as both antagonists in the escalation of military actions. The time is now to reassert the United States role in leadership in times of global crisis. And there is no better time when the eyes and ears of the world are focused on this State of The Union message. 

The seeds of violent confrontation were sowed years ago. The US is partly to blame. We must now reframe from causing a further deterioration of hostile violence to the point that sends one nation over the edge into the abyss. To this light that the movie “Threads” has to be shown again for every politician, every world leader, and every population to understand the true concept of what General of The Army Douglas MacArthur’s quote at the surrender of Japan in 1945.

One cannot help thinking about Woodrow Wilson and his quest for the League of Nations only to be denied its establishment. This denial sowed the seeds that gave to the rise of Nazi Germany that brought about the Second World War. 

When a nation becomes obsessed with retribution toward another nation without contemplating all the ramifications of their actions always have disastrous results. We must consider every avenue that leads to an end to what is turning into a prelude to World War III. We must not allow personal vendettas to only add more fuel to this fire. As was the case for the collapse of the League of Nations over 100 years ago.

The United States must realize that when two nations remain focused on their own resolve where one is the aggressor there has to be concessions made by both countries. The objective now is to negotiate and broker those concessions that are amicable for both Ukraine and Russa. We must realize that the US foreign policy ever since the end of World War II has been one failure after another. We created either inadvertently or not much destabilization in other countries to the point that our own credibility is in question. Now when we Alline ourselves as staunch supporters of retaliation against an aggressor nation without even considering why Russia initially pursued a military response to substantially secure their economic and financial stability has only exasperated this growing crisis.

The United States must make every effort to secure resolutions to end what is travesty on humanity. To do this is to not only listen to Russia’s objectives but try to negotiate between Ukraine to accept some if not all these following requirements. To felicitate the end of Russian forces occupation Ukraine needs to recognize Crimea and Sevastopol as Russian territory, a renouncement of plans to join NATO, demilitarization of the country and negotiation of the situation in Donbas.

Maybe in the future when cooler heads prevail these stipulations can be reconsidered. When MacArthur quoted in his address to Congress “When war is thrust upon us, we must us every means necessary to bring it to a swift end” Maybe by accepting these conditions a swift end will be achieved.
