I heard the results of the Iowa caucuses. How could I not? National Propaganda Radio talked about it all day long.

In my recent post The Very Heart of Denial, I wrote the following—

People want—are compelled—to divide the world up into “good” people and “bad” people. Who is “good” and who is “bad” depends on your point of view. And there are “bad” people—evil people—we should all keep an eye on, though most people can not spot them.

Please allow me to help you out here.

So many people will never attain a firm grasp of Reality. They’re not sure what’s going on. All opinions seem equally valid to them. They can not distinguish bullshit from non-bullshit. This terminal confusion is part and parcel of the Human Condition, and it’s a real problem.

The sad truth is that most people have no idea why they believe anything, although they are often willing to die defending those mysteriously acquired beliefs. Nor do they understand the often bizarre or illegitimate origins of the clutter in their minds. The clueless American media gives equal weight to everything, bullshit included. We might call this the Great Mediocrity. Whatever nonsense people believe is OK as far as the media is concerned. There are a few taboos—for example, overt, not well-disguised, racism—but otherwise the system is value-free.

Such confusion is an important reason (among many) why a purely Democratic form of government, even if we had one, will never give us good governance. Historically, the alternatives have been equally unpalatable.

To the confused people for whom it’s not entirely obvious already—they’re not very likely to know who they are—I want to say this:

Rick Santorum is the personification of evil. Let there be no doubt in your mind.

Not stupid. Not crazy. Evil. You’re just going to have to trust me on this one.

I’m going out now. I need a drink.
