It's Already Anarchy

We’re just doing a bad job of defending ourselves.

Anarchy is not a particular social structure. It is a perspective. It’s the recognition that aggressive coercion is neither necessary nor beneficial. It’s a moral code that shapes our perception of the world around us. Anarchy is a way of seeing society, not a type of society.

Many make the mistake of thinking something has to change in order for anarchy to emerge, that anarchy means a land without government. This fallacy traps people within the statist paradigm. A government is no more than the most powerful aggressive organization in a territory. Anywhere aggression exists, there is ‘government’, whether it’s Al Qaeda, the mafia, or a modern constitutional democratic republic. Government will never be eradicated because aggression will never be eradicated.

Franklin should have said “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and the threat of taxes.” People will always try to rob us, that is an unfortunate truth. But we get to decide how we’ll respond. The threats will always exist, but it’s up to us whether we acquiesce or fight back.

We must overcome fear and make the right choice. The only way to reduce tyranny is to oppose tyranny. Oppression cannot be legitimized and controlled. There is no system that can harness aggression for the greater good. It is a Fundamental Flaw. Extortion is always wrong, no matter what is done with the proceeds.

We’re already living in anarchy. Nothing has to change, we’re already there, we’re already free. We just have to decide what we’re going to do with our freedom.

When I first read today’s feature article this quote leaped out at me:

I’m familiar, of course, with the logic. When statists would say to me, “If you hate government so much, why don’t you go live in Somalia? There’s no government there and plenty of guns. You would love it!” I would point out, like a good little anarchist, that the violence going on in Somalia is between would-be governments. The fighting is a perpetual symptom of the state and the would-be state. The Somali people themselves are doing what every other sensible and civilized person in the world does: trying to live their lives outside of the violence and threatened violence of rulers and would-be rulers. In other words, trying to live in anarchy.

(Of course neither any of the mouthy statists had ever actually been to Somalia to see what life was like outside of the capital. In truth neither had any of us here at TDV have been to Somalia. Yet. We were planning a trip later this year to see what life was like far away from the capital and all the warlords vying to be the next “legitimate” government. Now that Somalia is in the process of violently setting up a “legitimate” government, however, a visit no longer seems like such a good idea.)

People everywhere live their lives in anarchy wherever they can, that is they make arrangements between themselves with no government threatening violence to influence their decisions. They trade, pick sexual partners, enjoy hobbies, buy what suits them and makes plans, all without the interference of government. Even though they may not acknowledge how much they prefer anarchy (because they don’t understand that the best parts of life are lived in the absence of a ruler), they will often try to minimize the roll of government in their own lives. As much as they may support the idea of taxes, for example, most of the sheeple will try to minimize (within the bounds of the law, of course!) how much they have to render unto Caesar.

Few people are willing to take this very sensible instinct to its logical conclusion. They are so brainwashed (from birth) about the state by the state and by the lateral slave-on-slave social pressure that they actually feel guilty and full of shame at the notion of keeping every single dime that crosses their palms out of the governments reach. Of course, these sorts of people (the majority) don’t even know enough to protect what they do earn from the government’s “stealth tax” of inflation by trading their Federal Reserve notes for precious metals.

But even among those who do know enough to get into gold (and silver), there is not enough understanding of the dangers of keeping that gold within easy reach of government confiscation. So let me take this chance to remind readers in the US that you live in the most powerful and murderous aggressor on the earth, one which has already once outlawed gold ownership for forty years. You should probably keep a little of your gold on hand (though silver or the other currency I discussed in the first issue of TDV Homegrown), but for the goodness sake get the rest of your gold away from the US government. It may seem a little far-fetched now, but gold could (again) end up on the list of things Americans are prohibited from owning, like certain plants. The US government thinks it can do whatever it wants to whomever it wants. Make sure that the majority of your gold isn’t somewhere this out-of-control and most dangerous of all governments can get its hands on it.
