TDV Week in Review November 11th, 2012

I’ve never been good at remembering the holidays that aren’t Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year. I like to think that this is a sign of my innate anarchism and that it kept me from ever being able to remember Presidents’ Day or Veterans Day. After all, according to the moral and political philosophies I came to embrace later in life, presidents and veterans are criminals by nature. Presidents are the very embodiment of executive political power and therefore the embodiment of aggression, coercion and the initiation of violence. Veterans are ex-soldiers…and soldiers are the tools of foreign (and sometimes domestic) political violence. Only a brainwashed statist would find something to honor or celebrate there.

But this is America, a land stuffed to the gills with brainwashed statists. I was driving behind a comically glaring example of the neocon variety of brainwashed statist just a couple days ago. I pulled up behind this cartoon of a person just a block from my destination and it turned out that he was heading to the same parking structure I was. I ended up following him up two parking ramps and then parking just a few feet away. I tried to get a picture of the vehicle surreptiously, but it was night and the lighting in the parking structure just wasn’t very good. So I’ll have to describe what I saw.

First the vehicle itslef was a jeep that sort of resembled a smaller Hummer. I’m not a “car guy” so I couldn’t quote you make and model. I can tell you that the vehicle was shiny black and had that cared-for look that suggested the owner thought of it as an extension of his own body or as a stand-in for his penis. The cover of the spare tire on the back door grill was decorated as an American flag. The big circle of stars and bars stood out boldly against the beetle-like shiny black of the vehicle istelf. There were three or four white decals on the back window with sayings like “9/11: Never Forget” and outlines of the Twin Towers. The license plate frame bore the words “Operation: Enduring Freedom.”

Here’s a chap who was completely swept up by the myth of 9/11 and who just never looked back. The narrative must have been so comforting to his reptilian, authoritarian brain: We were attacked and the Great Leader had to send the troops out to kick butt, while all those at home were called upon to lend their emotional and material support to the effort. This guy probably thinks of himself as loving his “country”…but what he really loves is being part of a collective whose leaders project unimaginable killing force at large populations. I am willing to bet a week’s pay that this guy also cheers for the cops when he sees police brutality videos. 

While most Americans aren’t quite as obnoxious as the Hummer pilot driving in front of me, they are pretty loathsome in their eagerness to thank soldiers and veterans for military service. What’s really frightening is how there’s almost zero questioning anymore. Being anti-military is so four decades ago. Even the usually anti-war left has fallen silent and accepted the grim necessity of murderous invasion along with the exhaulted nature of the state’s trained enforcer-killers thanks to the reign of the mixed-race Democratic messiah who uses military hardward to shed innocent blood with a zeal that would make Lincoln blush. 

What’s really funny is that the traditionally pro-war people on the Right are supposed to be somewhat more economically literate than the traditionally anti-war folks on the Left…but these days unreasoning love of the troops trumps economics. I read the other day on the Internet: “I believe a man with a helmet and defending his country should make more than a man with a helmet scoring a touchdown.” Apparently it’s been turned into an Internet meme!

What sort of nationalistic, anti-economic, state-fellating nonsense is this? I mean, really. Rare athletic talent earning hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars is the height of free market economics. The skill is rare and the demand to see it is great, hence the high salaries involved at the top. The skill required to be a grunt soldier is very low, the supply of potential workers is very high and the pay reflects that. You may as well demand that data entry clerks make more than NBA players. It’s a very rare person who can play professional football, while the military will take any low-IQ, talentless mouth-breather to direct drones, point guns at Middle Eastern wives and children and get blown up by IEDs. 

But this is the kind of irrational nonsense you can expect from the sheep in these last days of the empire. Sure, go ahead, take 90% from the salaries of all the professional athletes in the country and give it to troops. And then give the troops even more money! Economics be damned. The troops need to know we care.

“Then on Tuesday our power went out in this part of Brooklyn, but not before the power went out in Manhattan and Staten Island. In tandem, the cell phone networks and Internet went down for days.—Verizon, AT&T and Clear Wireless—yes I’ll call out the names of the ones I know about, but no company was immune. If you were lucky enough to have a landline –not likely in these days when everyone owns at least 2 cell phones— then maybe you could contact your family and friends, but they probably don’t have a landline, only cell phones, so you had no idea if they were safe and sound.

“So far, this was bad – no water, no power, no communications, I didn’t even get a chance to mention that the Mayor of NYC, Mike Bloomberg, suspended all buses and subways, railroads from Monday evening until further notice, so no public transportation either. But if you have a car, you can get around, right? Wrong.”
