China given the green light for MSCI Emerging Markets Index

In a landmark moment for Chinese stocks, 222 companies will become part of MSCI’s emerging Markets Index, after three years of being snubbed.

MSCI, the provider of investment index and analysis tools, is about to announce whether China’s A-shares are included in its benchmark emerging markets index, whose market value is 1.5 trillion US dollars. Inclusion in the index would assure more foreign participation in China’s growing stock markets.

M-S-C-I, the world’s largest indexing firm, says it’s planning to add mainland Chinese equities to its key benchmark of emerging market shares. In a long-awaited decision, the index provider said it will add two-hundred-22 Chinese large-cap shares on a gradual basis starting June next year. This could provide a significant boost to China’s stock market. Korea’s Financial Services Commission says China’s listing will not have a significant impact on Korean stocks– which are also categorized as emerging market assets. It did say, however, that up to three-point-seven billion U.S. dollars worth of foreign capital could flow out of the local market due to overall adjustments in the index. The agency said it will continue to initiate policies to attract foreign investors as well as push for more local stocks to be listed on the global index.

US stock index provider MSCI has agreed to include China’s mainland domestic shares in its emerging markets index for the first time.

The move is a step forward for Beijing as it attempts to open up its financial markets and attract foreign capital.

China’s inclusion had been rejected for the past three years, amid worries about regulation and accessibility for global investors.

MSCI is world’s biggest stock index provider.
