At Emsi, we’re all about innovation. That’s why we’ve spent the last year developing a brand new tool for our business/enterprise partners: Emsi Global.

With Emsi Global, companies can build global talent strategies with data they can trust and defend. Our methodology focuses on transparency, combining online profile data with structured government data.

Other popular global data sets make big claims that aren’t always true. Sometimes the data is weak, or it doesn’t accurately portray the talent market. Our goal with Emsi Global is to provide a comprehensive data set that is:

1. Transparent— We explain our methodology to show how we get our numbers.
2. Realistic— It’s better to underestimate than overestimate.
3. Defensible— We train you on how to explain the data’s strengths and weaknesses.

Methodology

So, what is our methodology? Good question. First, it should be noted that when it comes to data quality and quantity, not all countries are created equal. There are two main issues:

First, each country reports talent supply very differently. For example, the U.S. tracks over 800 categories of labor, while the Philippines track only 40. This creates a clash of names, definitions, and granularity. So what the U.S. calls a software developer isn’t necessarily labeled as such in the Philippines.

Second, online profiles aren’t nearly as prolific in countries outside the U.S., so global data providers that rely solely on online profiles miss a large portion of the world’s data.

Emsi attempts to overcome both of these challenges in Emsi Global.

First, we created a new taxonomy that unifies the occupation categories between countries so that searching for “software engineer” gets you the closest possible result, no matter what country you are evaluating.

Second, we have combined our own extensive profile data with government-reported data. This gives government data more granularity, and profile data more structure.

The result? The best possible high-level view of the global talent market.
