Job Postings Data: Track Hiring Trends in Real Time
As the COVID-19 outbreak continues and response measures ramp up, communities across the nation are just beginning to feel the economic ramifications of this public health crisis. To help you track the economic impact of these developments as they unfold, we’ve now added daily job postings data to our labor market analysis tools.
Here’s a look at how you can access this data and use it to better understand the evolving needs of employers, in real time. Also be sure to check out the walkthrough video at the end for more guidance on using these tools effectively.
Daily Postings Trend
By default, the postings trend graph displays monthly active job posting figures for your selected time frame, and extending back to 2016.
With today’s update, you can now select the Last 30 Days button to see daily active job posting figures over the past 30 days.
As a benchmark for comparison, the chart also shows posting trends for the same 30-day period in the previous year. Comparing the same 30-day period in consecutive years controls for factors like seasonality that might influence posting behavior in some industries, and provides a look at how current economic conditions are affecting posting behavior.
Job Postings Table
For more in-depth analysis, you can jump over to the Job Postings Table, where you can view posting trends by job title, occupation, company, or skill. When setting up the report, you now have the option to display data on “Daily Postings.”
Once you’ve run the report, you can use the Add/Remove Columns button to add data to your table showing posting numbers for the latest day, or the past seven, 30, 90, or 365 days. You can also view the percentage change in postings, which compares the number of unique postings in the selected time frame to the number of unique postings in the preceding time frame of the same length.
For example, in the below table, we’re looking at the percentage change between the number of unique postings for each job title over the last 30 days vs. the 30 days before that, as explained in the tool tip:
You can also run multiple time frame comparisons in the same table to get a sense for how short-term trends compare with a more long-term view. In the below table, for example, we can see that postings for many food service jobs in Seattle are up this year vs. last year, but have declined in the past week compared to the previous week:
This is useful for identifying areas of need, but sorting the “% Change” column from greatest to least can also help you discover opportunities for displaced workers and others looking for work. Below are some of the job titles showing growth in postings over the past week and month for the state of Washington (dominated by healthcare, but also including e-commerce managers and forklift operators):
And, as mentioned above, you can view these trends by company, occupation, job title, and even skill. For example, here are top skills appearing in latest day active postings (alongside month-over-month percentage change) for Amazon, which recently announced it would hire 100,000 new employees:
Here is a walkthrough video that explains how to navigate and understand this new data, so you can use it to make informed decisions:
If you have questions about accessing or using this job postings data, please reach out to your account manager or contact us. We would love to help you leverage these insights to serve your community.
With this update and additional resources that are coming soon, we want to help you make data-driven decisions that support the people and businesses in your region. If you’d like more economic data regarding COVID-19, please let us know and we’ll see what we can do to help.
