The deep divisions within American society are making themselves more and more evident, as growing numbers of the population lose faith in their country’s governing bodies. The case of George Floyd reminded thousands of atrocity that has been a massive problem in the United States for many years. This case is one of a disturbing many, but coupled with the ongoing crisis and the economic collapse, the response to this incident in particular may escalate into a far more prolonged and dangerous situation. Now more than ever, large portions of the public, particularly those that belong to minority groups, find it difficult, and in some cases hard, to trust the authorities.

The response in Minneapolis, where the kiling occurred, and in other cities across the US, was not necessarily a move in the right direction. Protests quickly spiraled into riots, often resulting in a damage to public property. When activists are burning down the communities that they are supposedly defending, a significant portion of their message is lost in the chaos.

After a Wednesday night full of arson and looting, protesters returned to the streets of Minneapolis the following day to march through main streets downtown. The crowd filled four blocks in the city center, leaving traffic at a standstill, and protestors could be heard chanting calls of “I can’t breathe” and “No justice, no peace; prosecute the police.”
This may seem like a justified response to one issue plaguing the United States, but in truth it represents only a small window into what is coming soon to major cities all over America.

In other words, if you think that these riots over police brutality are intense, just wait until the economic collapse riots begin.

As we plunge into the new great depression created by the pandemic and its ripple effects throughout the world, millions of Americans will become increasingly desperate. Many have already been hit by a chain of novel difficulties on a scale not seen in decades–lost jobs, inability to pay rent, sickness, and death of loved ones, among other crises.

On Thursday, an additional 2.1 million Americans filed for unemployment. Even with the Fed already printing an excess of new money with little regard for eventual consequences to such rash action, there is not enough to continuously sustain every American citizen in need. Stimulus checks have been used up and a second wave of direct payments is not yet approved.
Meanwhile, a historically high number of Americans remain unemployed, and with no income or employee benefits such as healthcare, will be left to weather many potential expenses with little or no assistance from the government.
For the past two and a half months, over 2 million new unemployment claims have been added each week.
Before this current crisis, the highest unemployed number had ever been for a single week was 695,000, which occurred in 1982. All in all, 40.8 million Americans filed new claims for unemployment benefits within that time frame, representing the most significant shift in unemployment in US history, and by no small margin. It also indicates that more than a quarter of all jobs across the country have been wiped out.

Even during the United States’ “good years,” there was a brewing sense of frustration. Now, as an already unstable country heads for economic depression, things are going to get much, much worse. When millions are jobless and therefore unable to provide even the most basic necessities for their loved ones, we are going to witness civilian frustration on a scale that is unlike anything ever before seen. One report showed that first-quarter GDP contracted by 5 percent, while the Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow tracker is indicating a drastic 41.9 percent dropoff in the second quarter of the year that will be the worst ever seen in US history. Some overly optimistic economists say that the country will recover in the latter part of the year as businesses begin to reopen and rehire laid-off workers, but countless indicators point in the opposite direction. Take careful note of what is happening in the streets of Minneapolis right now, because that could very well be what the future is going to look like in major cities across the US.
