Having a pet dog is having a member of the family. Being a family member, your dog deserves the best things, from health, food, and fun to the best home. Having a sound knowledge of what your pup should or should not eat is very important.

The question that needs to be answered right away is, can your puppy eat okra?

Thoroughly checking your dog’s meal is essential as what may be safe for you to eat might be risky for them. Some foods go beyond being dangerous to being deadly and poisonous.

What Dogs Eat Normally

Not all dogs are selective with what they are fed. They usually are obedient and compliant and would eat whatsoever you provide them.

The same might not go for other dogs, as some others tend to be picky. It becomes challenging to feed puppies who are very selective.

Although not all pet feed has supplements, the usual dog feed comprises a whole dry and wet meal. Dogs also forage if they are permitted to roam about; there are also treats for your pet dog.

Different dog breeds can do well when fed specific and varying types of dog meals.  The stated fact is meant to be highly considered when deciding what you want to provide your pup. Problems of indigestion and improper absorption of nutrients can be easily seen with dogs fed the wrong diet.

Now, let us look at okra and its effect on the health of your talk if ingested.

What Exactly is Okra?

Okra is a flowering plant that springs up annually; it a green plant that takes the shape of a pepper. When we talk about the taste, okra has quite a mild flavor; not sweet, not bland. The outer texture of this vegetable is chewy, and it contains a peach-like fuzz.

Okra plant is grown and cultivated in the United States to get its pods or fibrous fruits. Okra consists of white seeds, round in shape, found on its inside. The vegetable has various shapes, colors, tastes, and sizes.

The vegetable also has excellent medicinal relevance as it is commonly utilized in Ayurvedic Medicine. The pods of okra can be eaten raw or cooked; okra’s pods can also be made into flour. It is also interesting to note that okra seeds can be roasted and used instead of the usual decaffeinated coffee.

There is a widespread distribution of okra worldwide as it can be found in the US, Southern Europe, Asia, and Africa. Okra is also a multipurpose crop and can be used for many purposes.

Types of Okra

The two types that exist are red okras and green okra. One notable fact about the red okra is that it changes color and becomes green when it is cooked. Both variants contain the same taste; the only apparent difference between them is their color.

Okra Nutrition

Okra is one vegetable that has highly rich in nutrients; it is safe to tag it as nutrient-dense. Okra consists of antioxidants, fiber, protein, carbohydrates, and fatty acids (polyunsaturated). A raw piece of okra contains approximately 7% carbohydrates, 2% protein, 90% water, and a little fat.

Data released by the USDA tells us that having a 100g quantity of okra means you will be getting:

  • Vitamin C,
  • Vitamin K,
  • Folate
  • Mild levels of thiamin
  • high level of fiber and
  • Magnesium

Okra is also proven as an excellent antioxidant source. Certain studies have shown that okra and its components (seeds, pods, etc.) can prevent some kinds of cancers. The reason for their decisive action against cancer is the production of antioxidants.

The fiber usually given by okra appears in the form of pectin and gums, designed to recede serum cholesterol level. A portion of this fiber is insoluble, and this is very helpful to the gastrointestinal tract. Okra is also said to be an excellent protein supplement.

The vegetable is considered to have a similar amino acid composition to soybeans, only that its efficiency ratio is higher. Okra has also been shown to have purgative characteristics. It has mucilage, which binds to cholesterol and washes off poisonous substances.

Furthermore, okra is a proven natural solution for inflammation and ulcers. Researchers say that okra aids in the recovery of most people from weakness and depression.

The final nutrients that would be present after the preparation of okra are highly dependent on its preparation method. Okra can be of great benefit to your pet dog, especially after being adequately prepared, as it supplies lots of nutrients. Note that even though the vegetable is nutritious, it can never substitute the need for whole dog food.

If fed the whole dog food, your dog should never lack the needed nutrients because the feed is complete with the required nutrients.

Can Okra Harm Your Dog?

Before offering okra to your dog, ensure that it is appropriately and thoroughly washed.  Okra may contain pesticides on its body, which would harm your dog eventually. Okra falls into the category of choking hazards for your pet dog.

The implication is that all the okra’s pods and seeds have to be scraped off and removed before feeding your dog. Another problem with providing okra to your pet is your pet’s tendency to fall sick after ingesting a microorganism. Eating parasites and microorganisms should never occur, especially if you meet adequate measures of hygiene.

Gastrointestinal problems are also common when dogs feed on vegetables for a long time, consistently. These symptoms can include diarrhea, bloating, gas, and much more. When okra is given at a time or even consecutively, these symptoms set in.

The preparation method of okra is also a highly important factor that determines whether it would be harmful. Fried and pickled okra are not variants that might be safe for your dogs and must be avoided at all times. Fried foods are known to contain high-fat concentration.

Flour is employed in the preparation of fried okra. The disadvantage of this is that flour mostly contains gluten, which is harmful to your pet dog.

A mixture of different ingredients is needed to make pickled okra (e.g., onions and garlic), and these spices are dangerous to your pet dog’s health. That is why you should avoid this pickled variant of okra all the time.

It would be best if you avoided salty or heavily buttered okra or even okra that has been covered with specific enhancers (e.g., fatty flavor). They are highly toxic and dangerous to your pet dog’s health also.

Food allergies are also common to dogs, even with the consumption of okra. Like it is found with humans, dogs can also have food allergies- even a reaction to okra. That implies that although your dog has been able to ingest other foods properly, okra is now an exception.

The effect of these food allergies can be seen on the gastrointestinal tract and the skin. Ultimately, your pet dog starts to have diarrhea, vomiting, reduced energy, and loss of appetite. So, you see, consuming okra also has its harmful side for your dog.

Do Canines Love Okra?

Dogs have their unique preferences, just like we have in people. Some of them love okra, while others do not. Asides from the vegetable’s flavor, the texture of the okra is also to be considered. The singular way to find out if your dog prefers to consume okra is to give it a firsthand try.

Now, the question is this, is the consumption of okra safe for your dogs?

Can Your Pups Eat Okra?

Of course, they can. The shop where you get to purchase your okra has already gone through washing the okra to rid it of insects, dirt, and chemicals. It is safe for your dogs to consume okra as it contains magnesium, folate, calcium, potassium, and B and C Vitamins.

These micronutrients help boost your dog’s immunity, support metabolism, growth, muscles, bones development, etc. In the prevention of cancer, the antioxidant levels that okra gives is a significant player. Various research has shown that okra helps regulate blood sugar regulation, which is good to prevent diabetes.

According to a 2011 study, it was shown that the fiber of okra regulated blood glucose levels by controlling its absorption rate.

Serving Okra to Dogs

Now we are aware that it is OK to give okra to your pet dog, but should okra be served in just any way?

Direct okra is the best serving for your pet dog as long as it does not contain harmful spices or fries. If your pup does not reject the center of the okra, it can be safely given to it to snack upon a few slices.

Even though some dogs do not like to eat the slimy texture of okra seeds, okra seeds are very healthy for your dogs and can be eaten. Okra is not harmful to your pet dog, but it should be given to your dog in moderate quantities. It is also advisable to consult your vet before trying out new foods for your dog.
