In the UK, Online Gambling and Lotteries Were More Popular Than Other Trends

Before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, gambling revenues in the UK declined, but the lottery segment and online casinos saw a surge in activity on the part of players. The number of land-based betting offices and betting amounts also decreased.
According to the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC), the total gross income from gambling (GGY) amounted to 14.2 billion pounds sterling during the 12 months from the end of March 2019. Compared with the previous same period, the decline in GGY was 0.6%. Thus, GGY has been declining for the second consecutive year.
It should be noted that the reporting period ended 11 days after the UK authorities imposed quarantine restrictions. It is known from the reports that during the pre-quarantine period, on April 1, 2019, the authorities decided to reduce the rates in the terminals with a fixed factor (FOBT) in betting offices. At the same time, national lottery sales increased by 10.4% to £3.4 billion, other areas of the lottery segment increased by 13.2% to £611.6 million. The volume of both land based and online lotteries amounted to 28.2% of total gross market revenue.

After the first annual decline in GGY, online gambling is known to have recovered, rising by 8.1% to £5.7 billion, representing almost 40% of the total. In the same period last year, the segment reached 37% of the overall index.

GGY at online casinos increased by 3.7% to £2.175 billion. Total gross revenue from online casinos and online bingo increased by 15.5% (to £2.33 billion) and 0.5% (to £176.8 million) respectively. Slots accounted for the largest share (69.7%). GGY in this segment grew by 4.9% year on year.

The category of other areas of online gambling showed an increase of 18.5%. GGY in the poker segment increased by 2.7%. At the same time, total gross proceeds from roulette and blackjack decreased by 1.7 and 14% respectively.

In terms of bets, we know that online tennis also experienced a drop: GGY fell by 3.5% to £116.7 million and football remained the most popular destination. The volume of GGY in this sport increased by 13.8% to £1.13 billion and rates on horses and dog racing also increased by 28.2% (to £653 million) and 29.2% (to £73 million) respectively.
New account registrations for online gambling have increased by 30%, while the total amount of online invoices has decreased. GGY of land-based betting offices fell by a critical 26.4% to £2.4 billion. At the end of March this year, there were 7,681 betting offices, down from 8,320 at the end of March 2019. The number of bingo halls and vending machines has also decreased, but UK land-based casinos have been added – three more. GGY of land based casinos (from gaming tables and machines) fell by 4% to £1 billion. The total GGY of all slot machines fell by a quarter to £2.9 billion.
