Academic Honesty
Academic honesty is being free of dishonesty in academics. Academic dishonesty includes cheating on tests, using purchased materials prepared by other students, copying materials without giving credit to the original author (plagiarism), and other such dishonest practices. Cheating and stealing are usually accompanied with lying when a culprit is initially caught. Academic dishonesty will be minimized when good, clear academic honesty policies are developed and instituted; students are taught these academic honesty policies; academic honesty is continually stressed by the instructor; and when anyone is found guilty of a violation, he or she is swiftly but fairly dealt with to punish the violator.
Spaulding (2009) wrote a journal article on “Perceptions of Academic Honesty in Online vs. Face-to-Face Classrooms.” The article presented information on a study that he had conducted on the differences between online and fact-to-face students’ academic integrity perceptions of themselves and of other students. Results of the study showed no major differences of student’s academic honesty perceptions of their own behavior or their perceptions of other students’ behavior. This result corroborated the results of Grijalva, Nowell, and Kerkvliet (2006), where they concluded that their resulting 3% of online cheating indicated that differences in cheating online is statistically insignificant from cheating in brick-and-mortar (B&M) classrooms.
In every area of comparison, students indicated a lower percentage of cheating that they did and a higher percentage of cheating that they had perceived in other students. Apparently, there is unnecessary concern regarding the greater prevalence of academic dishonesty with online students as opposed to B&M students. Results, however, highlighted a few more-prevalent areas of academic dishonesty that are presently occurring. The identification of these areas of concern provide faculty with better knowledge to assist them in reducing, minimizing, and possibly eliminating academic dishonesty (Spaulding, 2009).
The Grijalva, Nowell, and Kerkvliet (2006) article on “Academic Honesty and Online Courses” was published three years before the article by Spaulding (2009). This article provided the groundwork for Spaulding (2009) to provide a more detailed, revealing study. As online education grows, Grijalva, Nowell, and Kerkvliet (2006) stated that no reason exists to suspect that academic dishonesty will become more prevalent among students.
A well-defined Academic Honesty Policy maintains integrity, honesty, and originality values in the virtual classroom. To assist in helping students follow this policy, we can use the TurnitIn® Originality Verification Tool (OV). This OV tool does not identify plagiarism; however, it assists students, teachers, and school administrators to investigate and verify the integrity of student-submitted materials.
