9 Life Lessons Taught by Homework

While most students and parents think assignments are a burden that should be done away with, homework can help to impart several life skills to a student. It is for that reason that homework should be taken seriously. You can read more about the life lessons taught by homework at this site.

Homework teaches responsibility.

A student is responsible for understanding the assignment instructions before they leave school for home. A student should take home all the necessary items needed for the assignment’s completion. As a student, your kid should be responsible for asking their teacher about instructions clarification. Moreover, it is a student’s responsibility to see to it that he/she has a schedule through which he/she work on assigned tasks by the teacher. Unless you have placed an order at custom essay writing websites, your kid is responsible for completing their assignments.

Assignments Teach Organizational Skills

Make sure your kid organizes his desk at home before starting his two or three hour study schedule. To avoid interruptions when he/she is working on their homework, you should have your kid ensure that they have everything they need at their desk.

It is good to avoid unnecessary movements in the room as he/she is looking for stationery or between their room and the kitchen looking for snacks. Remind him/her to take everything they need to his/her desk. Also ensure the desk is clean, well-lit and with enough space to spread text books and notebooks. The working area should always remain neat. Help your kid think through the steps they will take through completion of an activity. These steps will help in getting prepared for the assignment as well as getting their desk ready. If your kid learns this at this early age, he/she will be able to organize themselves even when older.

Research and Problem-Solving Skills

At home, parents are the teachers to their kids, especially when it is time to do homework. Parents should resist the urge of giving their kids the answers to the questions. It is not wise to do assignments for one’s children. Instead, parents should encourage their kid to do tasks on their own; parents should be there for guidance when needed. This approach helps students develop research skills and problem-solving skills. When your child is not sure about an assignment, you can go through the instructions together. Just ensure that you do not do the tasks for them. For math homework, for instance, you can do an example and let them solve the problems on their own.

Homework Teaches Focus

When an assignment requires the use of a computer for research, parents should guide the kid ensuring that they do not get into social networks before completing assignments. Parents should make it clear that there will always be time for chatting, but the assignments come first. When a kid gets such discipline, he/she understands how to focus on the task at hand first without getting carried away.

Time Management

Working on assignments builds time management skills. With the help of parents, students get to know how to prioritize tasks. While it is normal for a kid to invite friends over for a soccer game in their backyard after school, playing when he/she has assignments to do in all subjects would not be wise. Homework should come first, then play later. With such knowledge, kids become better time managers while at high school and in future. Video games and TV should not precede a challenging assignment. Have your kid establish a solid routine when it comes to homework. You should teach your son or daughter how to schedule time for recreation, home chores and homework.

Planning

You can guide your kid in planning by getting them an assignment book. Here, they will record assignments from different classes. The instructions column, due dates and a check-off box for tasks completed will be necessary. This way, you will be teaching your kid how to plan. With an assignment book, forgetting assignment deadlines will be a thing of the past. With the assignments and their due dates noted in a book, it is easy to come up with a strategy for tackling all tasks before the deadline.

Use of Resources to Get Work Done

Do not reveal answers to difficult questions. Instead, you should guide your kid on how to research for answers from the resources available. The internet, books and class notes are some of the resources kids have at their disposal. Once they learn today how to make use of available resources, it will become a skill which they can improve on and keep using in life. While custom essay writers from academic websites are a resource as well, your kid should have exploited other resources first.

Perseverance

When completing tasks, things might get difficult and require more than one approach and the use of different resources to get things done. Teach your kid how to look for options when things seem to have hit a dead end. It is wise to try before one gives up. Do not show your kid an easy way out by asking for help from custom essay writers. Do it only when necessary. Otherwise, your kid should learn to persevere until he/she gets an answer or until shows some working progress.

Concentration

Kids can be jumpy, but through an assignment, they can learn to concentrate on a single task until they have solved a math question or found the answers to theory questions. For young kids, especially K grade to 5th grade, the faculties of the mind are developing, and it is essential to guide children so that their brains can grow in the right direction. Parents should use assignments to help their kids know how to concentrate and focus on a task without being distracted by the environment around them.

While homework help can be useful when your kid has been assigned too much work, and there isn’t enough time between getting home from school and bedtime, it is always good to build lifelong skills such as concentration, time management, planning and organizing by guiding your kid on how to do homework.

That’s really interesting! I like this two – research and problem-solving skills; use of resources to get work done. Talking about resources I always ordered my essays on services like AustralianWriting. I think that I’m not good at that, so the best decision is to order it at some professional service. As for me it’s the proper use of such a resource as time =)
