How to Create the Ultimate Study Guide: NASM Edition

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

No matter how far removed from school you may be, we can all remember preparing for a big exam—the butterflies in our stomach, the anxiety, and the late-night study session can be overwhelming. You can combat this nervousness by being prepared and organizing your materials. Some people create an ultimate study guide or find one online for their particular exam.

To study for the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) exam, you should create the ultimate nasm study guide by gathering your notes and materials through research, buying a textbook, taking a practice test, or finding a thorough study guide online. Since many people find it difficult to pass the exam on the first attempt, you should carefully consider how you will proceed with the preparation and studying.

Creating a Study Guide

First, create a study schedule at least one year in advance. You should plan out how many chapters to study per week while giving yourself breaks and time to review. It’s okay to adjust this if it feels too overwhelming after trying it out the first couple of weeks. Next, familiarize yourself with the types of questions that will be on the exam. You can do this by looking at old versions of the exam.

Take note of the concepts you are good at, and plan to review them throughout your study plan, but know you may not need to go as in-depth with these topics. Instead, save more of your study time for issues you are struggling with.

You can practice reading the figures and charts on the exam. It’s helpful to study multiple figures relating to the same concept, so you are used to seeing the idea from different angles. Try printing a blank diagram and filling in the appropriate labels. This practice will help you know what terms you need to work on.

Tips for Studying for NASM

  • Create an exam preparation checklist. Think about what materials you need, from flashcards and pens to a nasm study guide. Place your checklist somewhere visible, along with the date of your exam. Some people also like a large calendar as a visual. Crossing out weeks of study sessions can be highly satisfying.
  • Designate an area for your supplies and a proper studying area, like at a desk or in an office. Your space should be distraction-free, quiet, and not in your bedroom. Motivate yourself by buying something fun for your space, like a comfy pillow, blanket, or desk organizer.
  • Study often and stick to a schedule. Start studying at least one year before the exam. Organize by working back from the exam date. Figure out how many weeks you have, and then divide the number of chapters by the number of weeks. Hopefully, this works out to about one chapter per week.
  • Make mnemonics to help with memorization of complex topics. For example, to remember that the three primary functions of the nervous system are sensory, integrative, and motor functions, imagine S-I-M and think of a SIM card on the back of your neck or a SIM that is sweating because it is nervous and shaking. Write “SIM” and draw a picture of what comes to mind. It seems silly, but it can work!
  • Have hard copies of diagrams, figures, and charts handy. Sometimes holding these things in your hands helps you picture them better. If you leave copies of them in strategic places where you might be waiting, you might buy yourself some extra study time.
  • Create flashcards. Sometimes, items like vocabulary words just need rote memorization. The more often you review flashcards, the more the words and their meanings will stick in your brain. Bonus if you pair the flashcard item with a drawing.
  • Make studying a game. Reward yourself with a special item, or snack, or take a short break once you complete your designated study time. Giving yourself deadlines and small rewards can be very motivating.

Conclusion

If you are well-prepared for your exam, showing off what you know can be fun. Chances are, you are excited to proceed in sports medicine and should be eager to get this milestone out of the way before continuing in a possible career. Long-term studying can also teach us a lesson in confidence. If you study hard and feel good about an exam, you will also be more confident during the exam and not second-guess yourself. Enjoy the sense of accomplishment after so much hard work and a job well done. Good luck!
