Mike Castle and the GOP: Delaware can Change the Equation
Mike Castle has a serious challenger in Christine O’Donnell. Why is a guy whose been in Politics for decades being challenged. Well, most likely its because he has been in Politics for decades. It seems that Mike Castle has all the traits that Republicans are beginning to dislike these days. First of all he’s been there for decades, so people are looking for a fresh face with no ties to the “inside the beltway” group think. Secondly he’s not a conservative and breaks ranks to join the Democrats on some key issues.
The biggest and most recent reason Republican Activists point to for rejecting Castle is the “Disclose ACT”. This legislation, which barely failed, as every single GOP Senator stood against it, was an attempted death blow to Republicans in the Election. It put massive regulatory requirements on every politically active group that advertised except those will special passes from the Democrats.This proposed legislation is patently unconstitutional-yet the Democrats knew the court time to litigate it would come after the election. Conservative Bloggers were scared as they could have been ensnared by this legislation. Castle supporting this has rankled grassroots Republicans.
The Second reason average Republicans are resisting Castle is his support for big labor unions. Castle votes with the union positions on Capital Hill legislation more than 50% of the time. Accordingly, Obama ally and Chicago headquartered SEIU has given Castle’s campaign over $30,000 since 2000.
Should Castle be knocked off by Christine O’Donnell It’s a real big deal-why? Because it would be the first time East Coast Voters would have rejected an established politician in a GOP primary for US Senate.
