Environmentally Friendly Cars

Many of us fondly remember Fred Flinstone and his foot-powered automobile. Unfortunately, the self-powered car never materialized in our real world. Instead, we have millions of cars on the road today that all use a lot of gas and produce fumes that are harmful to our environment. Environmentally friendly cars are a big step in the right direction. While many still require the use of gasoline the consumption is severely reduced, and to many people that care deeply for the environment that is wonderful news.

One of the most popular types of environmentally friendly cars is the hybrid. The hybrid car uses gasoline in order to function, but it does not use gasoline to the same degree that regular cars and trucks do. Instead, hybrid cars use gasoline in addition to a battery and motor to power the automobile. The battery helps to make a smaller amount of gas last longer. This means that hybrids often have a much higher Mile Per Gallon (MPG) rating than regular cars. A lot of the top car suppliers have begun selling hybrid cars in order to help people consume less gasoline, especially as gas prices continue to grow. One of the most popular hybrids available is the Toyota Prius. This model offers a convenient hatchback design and its success and reliability has helped to place hybrids as a viable automobile option even to many of the most severe critics. Honda also sells a popular Hybrid option, that being their Civic hybrid.

As Hybrids develop further many companies are starting to release full electric cars. Electric cars are incredibly environmentally friendly because they do not require any gasoline usage. They do, however, require electricity. Electric cars are a great option to pursue in the future, especially as more environmentally friendly modes of electricity emerge as many areas move away from coal and nuclear power. Electric cars are emission free and at the moment many cars can travel over 100 miles before needing a re-charge. This makes electric cars one of the best options available for local and city driving.

When thinking about environmentally friendly cars it is best to think small. Smaller cars require less power to function, which means they use and ultimately waste less resources. Several companies have begun advertising hybrid trucks and SUVs. While the hybrid versions of these over sized vehicles offers a more environmentally friendly alternative to their gas guzzling alternatives, the hybrids are not nearly as ideal from an environmental perspective as even a non-hybrid small car. Compact cars are perfect for local and city driving. Small cars like the smart car and the fiat are popular all over the world. These cars only fit two people but boast one of the highest mile per gallon ratings available, often getting over 40 mpg during highway driving.

Environmentally friendly cars are growing in popularity and appear bound to be part of the future. Purchasing a high mpg compact car, a hybrid car or an electric car will put you a step ahead and is a great way to make a positive impact on the environment.
