Home Renovation Tips for a More Energy Efficient Home

Follow us as we Twitter about energy.

Even if you’re skeptical about environmental issues, everyone should try to make their homes as energy-efficient as possible. It has been estimated that the average homeowner could save up to 15% on their yearly energy bill simply by insulating their water heater. You can only imagine the kind of savings you could make if you did anything more serious. Let’s take a look at a few renovation tips for a more energy-efficient home.

Consider Adding, Replacing, or Updating Your Windows

Windows play an essential role in energy efficiency. They can help insulate a room. They help prevent heat transfer. They can also make a difference when it comes to natural light. It has been estimated that you can save up to 40% on your energy bills by improving your doors, windows, and cutting drafts, so that’s one of the first things you should do.

We also suggest you consult with experts like Advantage Construction and start looking at the different options available. Choosing the right type will help you maximize natural light and can make a huge difference to your energy bills. Daylighting, as it’s called, could help you save up to 30% on your energy bills. So, make sure that you pick the right models with the right glazing, and make sure that they’re installed by the right team.

Roofing Installation and Insulation

If you were thinking of installing a new roof, this could be a great opportunity to make your home more energy-efficient. Simply going for lighter shingles could help you save tons of money on energy costs every year.

Light shingles have the benefit of reflecting light, which will make the house and attic much cooler. It was estimated that roofs with dark shingles were up to 15°F warmer than those with light ones. While those living in colder climates might appreciate a darker roof if they want to melt ice faster, they’ll still have to pay for it in the summertime.

The next step is making sure that the area under the roof is properly insulated. The attic is where most of your heat escapes. This also means that the area will need more heating in the summer if it’s poorly insulated. The good news is that insulating an attic is easy and can be done by virtually anyone, so make sure that you inspect it properly and do what is needed if you notice issues.

Use Landscaping to Your Advantage

You can also use your exterior to make savings. Deciduous trees can be used to shade critical areas that are exposed to the sun during peak hours. Never underestimate the power of shading when it comes to cooling and how much of an impact it can have on your home’s AC. If you want to block heat from the sun in the summer but let it in during the winter months, plant trees on the east and west side of your building.

As you can see, there are tons of ways that you can make your home more energy efficient by making the right changes. Make sure that you consider all of these options and take the time to consider the impact of each of your renovations on your overall energy consumption.

Thanks for sharing that! I am currently looking for ways to make my home more energy-efficient. I have already changed all the plumbing stuff to a more modern one. Also, I used to experience some issues with sound insolation between two stores. A friend of mine recommended changing our wooden floor covering to a carpet, but I did not want to have carpet everywhere. It was very hard to find some worthy rugs that look modern and suit our interior design style. Well, I ordered two large rugs from the DorisLeslieBlau gallery. It has solved the issue.
