Washington, D.C. – Raymond Jefferson, a Presidential Appointee in the Obama administration who served as the Assistant Secretary for the Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (VETS) at the U.S. Department of Labor, was a participant in a two- year study conducted by business in government experts Paul R. Lawrence and Mark A. Abramson.
The findings were published in the book, ‘Paths to Making a Difference: Leading in Government’. Ray Jefferson is featured in the book, written by Lawrence and Abramson, which examines case studies, based on how each participant approached management challenges and achieved the mission of their organization.
Ray Jefferson is featured in Chapter 7 of the book, The Collaborators, which examines study participants, John Berry, David A. Hinson, and Ray Jefferson.
In the book, Ray Jefferson reflects back on the planning and development phase that followed his nomination for the role of Assistant Secretary for VETS at the U.S. Department of Labor as well as his determination to reach out to relevant experts in order to learn as much as he could about the agency, Veterans’ employment, and the corresponding opportunities, and challenges.
Ray Jefferson’s career in the military and at West Point played a key role in his dedication to form an effective team, a team that would go on to do great things within the Agency and for our nation’s Veterans. The book provides insight to Raymond Jefferson launching a “100-Day Sprint”, a mission to speed things up within the Agency so that his team could make rapid progress in a variety of areas and demonstrate what they were capable of achieving.
The mission was based partly on Ray’s previous experience as an Army Officer, a West Point graduate and as a Leadership Consultant with McKinsey & Company in Singapore. His story and many others are revealed within the pages of the book which provides insight and an understanding of how leaders work to make government agencies more effective.
Raymond Jefferson has extensive experience and expertise in the fields of leadership development and labor and has participated in a number of speaking events throughout his career. Ray Jefferson addressed the 2010 graduating class of Social Work at Columbia University, the 2010 SHRM Leadership Conference, and has also spoken at a variety of leadership events and hiring conferences. Ray Jefferson, an effective and highly respected leader with an incredible story to share, is available for speaking engagements, while he continues on the path to accomplishing even more in the realms of leadership, organizational transformation and helping our nation’s Veterans.
Ray Jefferson has exemplified leadership throughout his career which began at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point where Ray graduated with major in leadership. Ray Jefferson proudly served as an Army Officer with the infantry, Rangers and Special Forces, with leadership positions in the U.S. Presidential Honor Guard, 3rd Ranger Battalion and 1st Special Forces Group. Ray Jefferson’s ability to lead and exemplify selfless service became even more notable when he sacrificed all five fingers on his left hand while attempting to protect his teammates from a hand grenade detonating prematurely during classified Special Forces training.
Ray Jefferson went on to earn an MPA in Strategic Management with Distinction as a Littauer Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, an MBA from Harvard Business School and was recognized with the Dean’s Award for exceptional leadership and service.
