What the Future Holds

Over the last few years both Virtual Reality and Augmented reality technologies have had a great deal of attention with the headset by Sony highlighting how good VR games can be (that’s if you don’t suffer VR sickness!)

At the same time the Google Carboard headset and the Daydream View headset are further driving VR into the mainstream, and as Pokemon Go proved, smartphones users are all to ready and willing to adopt augmented reality.

But still we are tethered to our consoles or pc’s and un-tethering VR headsets has to be the way to go.

Today, Oculus Rift and Vive headsets are built on outside-in tracking technology and this means that the sensors are on the outside of the headset. These sensors ‘watch’ he headset allowing the system to orient then position a player’s hands and head within the virtual reality.

The whole experience is one in a defined space which is seen by the sensors, and if you step or turn away from that particular space then VR no longer exists.

Now take inside-out VR technology which the Oculus’ Santa Cruz is built on. The headset is completely untethered. It has the sensors and looks at the environment around it and places the user in a VR environment, so theoretically VR which is done with inside-out could be infinite.

The controllers also do not need to be tethered as they can be seen by the headset when users are playing games or exactly the same as an outside-in VR system.

Just imagine un-tethered VR headsets and controllers and what this technology would mean. Not being connected to a pc would be a pretty incredible experience.

Personally I love to play online bingo where I catch up with friends and family via the chat feature whilst enjoying my games in a safe and secure environment. High-end sites offer me a great selection of bingo games, slots and casino games as well as instants for a change of pace. Being able to play whenever and wherever I want to very much appeals to me as I can play for a few minutes during my lunch break or settle down for a full session.

If I thought that I could use VR technology to visit my favourite bingo site and that I could be totally immersed in the VR experience and be with others using the same technology?

It’s going to happen…the future is virtual.
