There is a good chance that most consumers probably have not heard of SonarWorks, because they are a company that is exclusive to the audio engineering circle. They are most well known for tuning professional speakers. Fortunately, this company has just recently set their sights on a different task. In fact, they are looking to delve into the mainstream market by calibrating standard headphones to give them the same audio quality, as you would get from a professional set of studio headphones. Can they really do this and if so how exactly would they go about accomplishing this task?

Well, they have really simplified the process and made it extremely easy for consumers. All you have to do is download their software, which is known as True-Fi, hook up your headphones, and tell the software which type of make and model of headphones that you are currently using. As of right now the software supports 183 different models, but consumers can expect this number to gradually grow as the popularity of the app begins to soar. Once you are all hooked up and have identified your headphones, the software will modify your computer’s audio output.

The software modifies the output by flattening the frequency response and trying to get it to as close of a neutral sound as possible. This is the sound that professional studio owners are able to achieve through their high-tech gear. And, the software does an excellent job of syncing up and producing this sound. With this amazing app you can literally achieve the same quality and precision that the pros get form the headphones for studio owners.

SonarWorks was not one bit shy about boasting and showing off its progress, as the company has already invited some of the biggest tech names into their studio in Manhattan to test out their creation.

According to the company, True-Fi is capable of delivering a studio-grade sound. This sound quality is guaranteed with all supported headphones, including the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO and Marshall Major 2. However, the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO has a price tag of around $180, so it is only expected that it would deliver a studio-grade sound. The Marshall Major II is a little cheaper, averaging around $65.

If the technology works as guaranteed, audiophiles who own an affordable headphone will no longer need to invest in a more expensive brand. Instead they can download the software to their computer, complete the setup process and enjoy studio- or stage-grade sounds. Whether the technology works the same for all the supported headphones is not yet clear. While some audiophiles may be satisfied with a little improvement, others may expect too much, since the download costs $79.

SonarWorks has even gone as far as claiming that their software goes beyond anything that any consumer could achieve with EQing. EQ only offers approximately ten bands that can be tweaked. In fact, a fancy one may even offer a dozen or more tweaks. While the company does not want to reveal all of its secrets, the spokesperson said that they have a thousand different points to work with. Consumers will be able to literally make precise micro-adjustments that will eliminate any typical artifact that would be encountered when EQing.

However, the most unique thing about True-Fi is its true simplicity. All you have to do is plug in you headphones and select your model from the list. The only tweaks that you will have to make are adding the bass and adjusting the hearing-loss compensation, which are quick and simple. This unique software has currently hit the market and is available for both Mac and PC. A mobile version is expected to be on the market soon, but as of right now there is no release date.
