World Cup the Perfect Finale for Ronaldo and Messi Rivalry

The Trending Football News for a days have been on the likely teams to lift the world cup. Football nations Germany, Spain, Brazil and France are been listed as clear favorites but much emphasis have been removed from the fact that the FIFA footballer of the year accolade depends on the trophy. The reverse of Fifa Balon d’or awards back to the initial Balon d’or and FIFA footballer of the year individual awards meant that the world cup will play a crucial role in the quest for FIFA footballer of the year award. This means that gladiators such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will have to extend their rivalry to the competition if they want to acquire the most coveted individual accolade in world football. Moscow could be set to provide the finale to the decade long football rivalry between the Argentine football prodigy and the Portuguese talisman if both of them make it to the finale of the world competition. The two players already boasted success in their previous league outing with Cristiano Ronaldo lifting the UEFA Champion’s league with Real Madrid while Lionel Messi settling for the Spanish league and Spanish cup trophy.

The rivalries between the two footballer began as far back as 2008 when Messi’s Barcelona were seeded to play Ronaldo’s Manchester united at the Semi-finals of the UEFA Champion’s league enroute to United continental triumph. Since then the two footballers have gone on to win the UEFA trophy a collective 8 times, the Spanish league 10 times while dominating the Copa de Rey. Their pursuit for the FIFA’s most coveted personal accolade led to a decade long era of dominance which saw them break existing football records such as Gerd Mullers, Alfredo Di Stefano etc., set personal records and most importantly a permanent presence in the FifPro eleven in Fifa award.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo despite possessing different football qualities would still push for the FIFA world cup as the quickiest method to land the most coveted FiFA footballer’s award. The 30 year old Argentine left footed attacker is a team player recognized as one of the best footballers of the modern day as he possesses one of the best football control, speed, confidence, agility with the ball, touch of class and most especially talent. Lionel Messi have been proven to be adept with different mangers and tactics with Pep Guardiola’s era as one of his most revered memory. Cristiano Ronaldo during the course of his football career established himself as player with pace, skill, tenacity and his individual brilliance. The 33 year old has proven to be a goal scoring machine with his aerial presence as well as his huge power in both lethal left and right foot especially when he is present with a chance.

The both players have come closed to success in the competition in the past with their national teams. Ronaldo’s Portugal could only finish 4th place in the 2006 edition of the world cup after losing to France in the semi-finals and Germany in the third place game. Messi’s Argentina came very close in the last edition of the competition only to be denied by a Mario Gotze effort at the Finals. While Ronaldo’s Portugal have been able to recover from their shock final loss to Greece in 2004 with a surprising 1-0 victory over host France in the 2016 edition of the Euro games, Messi’s Argentine team on the other hand have failed to win three consecutive finals in all competition.

Russia provides the last chance for Lionel Messi to pick the most coveted trophy in world football. The Argentine who was called back to action after retiring from the team in 2016 have hinted at a permanent retirement from national football after the world cup in Russia. The 5 times Fifa player of the year will be eyeing the world cup triumph as a perfect farewell to national football. Four times Fifa footballer of the year Cristiano Ronaldo will be hoping to equal rivals Messi by grab the biggest prize in football in his last competitive outing for Portugal. Moscow was the arena that brought Cristiano Ronaldo to worldwide limelight in 2008, Moscow could very well provide the finale for the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry.
