Building a Better Society Through Corporate Stewardship

The dawn of the 21st century has seen unparalleled shifts in every facet of society, marking the beginning of a new collective awareness of the realities of modern life and waking us up to the long-term effects of environmental and societal neglect. This, in turn, has led to a change in attitudes regarding the quality of our lives and the kind of future we want to leave to our children. Our countries are increasingly divided, and the past solutions weren’t enough to address the underlying issues.

However, there is a great awakening on the horizon. We are approaching a major break with modern mores and slowly realigning our priorities in a manner that veers away from the demands of a consumer-driven society and moves us toward a climate of mutual benefit and cooperation. This new awareness is leading corporations to rethink their commitment to the betterment of society and re-evaluate their impact on the environment and the world at large.

How Corporations Are Making the Shift

Traditionally, non-profits are seen as the sole purveyors of grass roots social solidarity, and corporations are generally viewed as holding up their part of community service after ensuring that their shareholders are happy. While more companies are beginning to understand the need for implementing eco-friendly business practices and the intrinsic value of giving back to the community, there is an even deeper evolution that has the potential to make an even bigger impact on society: the concept of seeing the public not simply as consumers, but as stakeholders.

This shifting mindset plays an important part in crafting more sustainable business models for the good of society as a whole, and it’s driven by a change in what customers and employees – especially from the Millennial generation – expect from today’s corporations. No longer are we willing to settle for a lack of transparency and accountability. We want to know that the companies that we work for and do business with are concerned with our health and well-being.

The new consumer demand has led to the creation of a business model that’s known as mission-driven metrics, which is an organizational means of measuring the success of a business based on the social consciousness of a company and is less dependent on its bottom line. The surprising factor in this new mode of business planning is that companies implementing this methodology and mindset are growing at a faster rate than companies that work on a more traditional business model.

The New Age Philanthropists

Another way that companies are impacting society if through philanthropy and charitable giving. Corporate philanthropists have been with us since the inception of modern business, going all the way back to such notables as Andrew Carnegie. This spirit of giving continues into the 21st century, and more companies are finding ways to take stewardship of the environment, help build better communities and enhance educational opportunities through philanthropic endeavors like the creation of trusts to fund medical research, establishing scholarships and founding charitable organizations.

The difference is that today’s philanthropists aren’t waiting until retirement to start giving back, and they’re lending more than just their names and money to worthy causes. The new philanthropists are younger than ever and more committed to becoming personally involved, and they’re doing it on a scale that’s never been seen before. One major news publication has even given a name to this new twist on corporate endowment: philanthropreneurship. The characteristics of the modern ‘philanthropreneur’ are:

- Having a passion to make the world a better place

- Having the means and ability to give time, money or knowledge to the cause

- Having a creative vision or taking a unique approach to problem-solving

- Exhibiting leadership, organizational and motivational skills that inspire and influence others to act

These concepts are embodied by CEOs who consider their skill set as a tool for further developing opportunities and solve pressing societal issues; they aren’t acting on their own either. The business moguls of today are joining forces to form cooperative initiatives that have a more direct impact on the recipients of their largesse, be they individuals who show great potential or undeserved populations.

Healing the wounds inflicted on society by detrimental business practices takes time, and it will require a concerted effort at all levels of society in order to create a civilization that’s based on harmony. But with perseverance and positivity, it is possible to enter into a new and lasting era of global enlightenment and direct action by corporate philanthropists that benefits the earth and all of its inhabitants.
