Killing ideological Establishments with Ground-Up reform, Part 2
Having yesterday suggested the general necessity to move far beyond the political and bureaucratic élites in order to effect open-minded cultural change free from stultifying ideology, in this second part of a special Slog thinkpiece, the aim is to set out some particular features of how an extra-Parliamentary movement could peacefully threaten the established order, and quite legally make it impossible for implacable oligarchies to function.
Towards the end of yesterday’s Part 1 of this double-header Slogpost, I posited four key approaches for a Movement of the sort I have in mind. I enlarge on these below.
1. Skills in, and familiarity with, ground level tactics
In the shorter term, this is about elections. Not trying to get elected under the current system, but demonstrating People Power via tactical voting. Trying to achieve valid ends by using the legislature and the judiciary of the existing régime rarely bears fruit. In fact, nothing has in a consistent sense since the birth of the Parliamentary Labour Party 130 years ago….and even that required an electoral alliance with the Liberal Party.
For example, if one looks at the lack of progress made in search of justice by the WASPI and 2020 SPA reform victims over the last decade, it has so far proven to be both a painful and fruitless process.
Now, it is a fact that SPA victims represent, on average, around 6,700 women voters per constituency in England and Wales. (In coastal resorts and other retirement centres, it is as high as 10,000). A better trained and more astute approach to that reality would have produced, since 2009, in the region of 40-45 “shock” election results, many of them in constituencies which are far from marginal.
Such is a demonstration of power. Ultimately, it is the only thing cynical and controlling élites understand. In fact, they live in secret fear of it. It really matters little which individual Party gains or loses on each occasion, it sends a message to all of Westminster: “You have been rumbled, and you can be humbled”.
2. Ways to form communications and solidarity free from heavy-handed State surveillance
At the core, this really means rejecting telecoms, the internet and above all social media as a means of recruiting volunteers and arranging tactical solidarity. Given the vital element of surprise here, for obvious reasons I’m not going to get into the detail: suffice to observe that it is very hard to employ peaceful means designed to make oligarchies uncomfortable if they know what’s coming.
3. Building new forms of fiscal and economic exchange beyond the reach of governmental, financial, ideological and multinational squids
Other posts at The Slog in recent months have looked closely at this already established global trend. The most apposite of these, I would suggest, is that of April 6th 2019, which coined the phrase Personal Destiny Control or PDC.
Seeking to describe and audit ‘the multivariate attempts of positively anti-State groups to evade the attentions of (and build alternatives to) increasingly remote institutions and services that have been bought by the 3%’, the post listed PDC news sites, bitcoin, the as yet ill-understood Web3 and non-bank debit cards without frontiers as just a few among many already flourishing activities around the globe.
Such approaches not only offer some safety from the prying eyes of State Policemen: rather more to the point, PDC is the beginning of the end of this enervating belief held by most Western citizens that survival without the duvet of the State to cover us is impossible. Of course (at least, in my view) there will always be the notions of a silver-years pension in return for social welfare contributions – although the DWP seems a little confused on this point – and help willingly given by the community to those people who made a bad call, were swindled or have either become or were born disabled physically or mentally.
But in reality, the contemporary model is little more than a loose alliance of carpetbaggers in bed with government in a scam to charge the average elector more and more for less and less….all the while collecting “useful” information on how to fleece them with ever greater efficiency in the future. A less globalist World with power massively devolved from the national (in EU-speak ‘regional’) centres to local community units would resist the tax evasion, investment demands, bailout needs, red tape and mendacity of neoliberal forces who long ago bought the whores we risibly refer to as legislators and bureaucrats. The capital released by such a transformation would give every responsible individual more funds for rainy days, far easier access to seed capital in support of new business sectors, and the sort of PDC most of us can only dream about.
It is impossible to exaggerate the importance of such freedom. The UK campaign to remain in the EU – and it is still just that – focuses almost entirely on fear of government not working.
Government works either dysfunctionally, inaccurately, wastefully or selfishly most of the time. If you require evidence of this, note how Britain continues to function perfectly well during the long Parliamentary recesses. Note specifically how three years of Brexit Doolittle have made no discernible difference to any of us. Observe how almost every national economy of any size or importance carries with it an enormous sovereign debt, and a growth dependent upon easy credit among the populace.
Once people experience life without this self-interested élite incompetence, it’s game over for the oligarchies. It explains why they work so hard and spend so much of our money to convince us that, without their fiscal incontinence, the Sky would fall in, Chicken Licken.
4. Starving the Beast
It is illegal to promote the idea of either tax strikes or tax evasion in most First World counties – including the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, huge numbers of citizens evade tax for reasons that go way beyond social irresponsibility, and have as much to do with detestation of the vain, wasteful and corrupt nature of their masters. The truth is that, if citizens don’t get greedy or careless, the chances are slim that they’ll be caught by the revenue collectors.
It is thus not entirely surprising that the banking systems of the EU and the US are currently encouraging the practice of universal ‘no contact’ plastic smart card purchases in a bid to make cash redundant. If cash was no longer legal tender, the State could (a) monitor every sum that goes into your bank account via EFTPOS and (b) force depositors with a bank to bail it out by using the funds therein to pay creditors. This is also known in some circles as stealing.
However – as always a chap who abides by the Law – my purpose is not to encourage evasion of such things. There are many perfectly legal alternatives:
4.1 Cash-free exchange groups are growing in numbers. Shops which are effectively a cross between a pawnbroker and a barter auction can be found in most countries. Because no monetary income is involved – and the retailer doesn’t offer anything for sale – there is no tax liability. In fact, even if tax collectors tried to muscle in on this activity, it is hard to see how detection or prosecution could be made to stick under EU personal Rights legislation. Indeed, the cost of collection and legal action would vastly outweigh any revenue received.
4.2 A large number of global economies simply could not function without cash. Without draconian legislation and as yet unforeseeable technical advances, huge areas of southern Europe, Africa, South America, India and East Asia would see their governments swamped with welfare costs amounting to sums far in excess of any new collection opportunities. Infinitely more likely is that there would be massive social and political resistance to such a move.
Bankers don’t take such obvious consequences into account, which is why we the citzenry have spent so much time in the 21st century bailing them out. Cash will therefore remain an important element (at least beyond the First World) for many years to come. And if digital payment isn’t globally universal, there are myriad ways to avoid it.
4.3 There is much broader point here: it is indeed illegal to evade tax or encourage such evasion, but it will never be illegal to simply not consume. The UK is home to way too many young people with no artisan skills, thanks to the bourgeois “equality” drivel promoted by New Labour, and its “By 2020, all British children will go to University”. Technical repair and craft skills were idiotically dumped from secondary education.
This has enabled a ridiculous situation where – from computers via dishwashers to cars – some retail ‘after sales’ jerk armed with a spanner can tell you that replacing the article will be cheaper than repairing it. It’s standard behaviour from a big business community that could not survive without shoddy manufacture and Chinese circuit boards dictating outrageous rates of durable replacement.
Locally derived and funded apprenticeships could bring independent artisanales craftspeople back into the economic mix. For the UK in particular (with its weak manufacturing base) it would both reduce the import bill and remove many ‘neets’ from the welfare budget, also cutting pressure on the housing crisis by reducing the need to import skilled workers from countries with far more common sense than ours.
J M Bateman-style horror at this idea will be evoked among the financialised economists in our midst, because their sole criterion of judgement is gdp. But that criterion of national “success” is entirely driven by bourse market expectations based on nothing more than wishful thinking, greed and bonuses.
The ideas above are just a few I have mulled over during the last seven or eight years. There are may others, I am sure, that would emerge from more fertile, younger minds than mine.
The passepartout to success and fulfilment in the future for the maximum number of Western citizens is to ignore the Top Down received truths of those with an exclusive agenda – in favour of evidenced strategies that can be far more inclusive.
But the starting point is to abandon the stockade and question all the baseless assumptions:
- that worldwide mercantile trade liberates the average citizen
- that financialised trade is capitalism
- that globalist concerns can revitalise tired sectors
- that national and local self-sufficiency are a bad thing
- that any science is “settled”
- that any existing Establishment Party works in the community interest
- that democracy is a minority political system
- that oligarchic electoral systems can adapt to general benefit
- that Turkeys vote for Christmas
- that education rewarding conformity is anything other than fascist
- that Big is Good
- that blocism is the future
- that Britain needs trade and military alliances in order to be “safe”.
