Major Twitter and China news: Links 1, November 29, 2022

1. You know when it’s OK to have all white people in a commercial? When you run an add to get people to kill themselves.

2. Let the ‘Revolution’ Begin: Elon Musk to Publicly Release “Free Speech Suppression Files” on Twitter

Twitter was a great tool for sharing news quickly, but it was damaged greatly by the previous management running the platform, who were far-left radicals.

These individuals, like former CEO Jack Dorsey, participated in far-left activities like the violent protests in Ferguson, Missouri. […]

Elon Musk confirmed last week that Twitter had an extreme bias against conservatives. Musk tweeted in a response to Kyle Becker about Twitter’s bias:

“As is obvious to all but the media, there is not one permanent ban on even the most far-left account spouting utter lies,” Musk said.

“Not even Associated Press with their completely fictional report on Russian missiles hitting Poland that carried severe consequences for escalating the war.”

(Hard to estimate the effect of this. We know what it should be. But it isn’t like the people now in control don’t have counter-measures of some kind)

3. The largest quarantine camp in China’s Guangzhou city is being built. It has 90,000 isolation pods.

AP News:

Chinese city plans 250,000 quarantine beds to fight virus

BEIJING (AP) — China’s southern metropolis of Guangzhou announced plans Thursday to build quarantine facilities for nearly 250,000 people to fight surging coronavirus outbreaks even as the national government tries to reduce the impact of anti-disease controls that have confined millions of people to their homes.

Guangzhou, a city of 13 million people and the biggest of a series of hot spots across China with outbreaks since early October, reported 9,680 new cases in the past 24 hours. That was about 40% of the 23,276 cases reported nationwide.

China’s infection numbers are low compared with the United States and other major countries, but the ruling Communist Party is trying to isolate every case. Repeated closures of neighborhoods, schools and businesses are fueling public frustration and clashes with health workers.

“The epidemic situation in Guangzhou still is very serious,” said a city official, Wang Baosen, according to the South Metropolis Daily newspaper.

Authorities in Guangzhou sent 95,300 people from the city’s Haizhu district to quarantine centers or for hospital treatment, the government announced.

4. Meanwhile, in Pre-Musk Twitteropia: Massive Twitter data breach was far worse than reported, reveal security researchers

A massive Twitter data breach last year, exposing more than five million phone numbers and email addresses, was worse than initially reported. We’ve been shown evidence that the same security vulnerability was exploited by multiple bad actors, and the hacked data has been offered for sale on the dark web by several sources.

It had previously been thought that only one hacker gained access to the data, and Twitter’s belated admission reinforced this impression …

Background

HackerOne first reported the vulnerability back in January, which allowed anyone to enter a phone number or email address, and then find the associated twitterID. This is an internal identifier used by Twitter, but can be readily converted to a Twitter handle.

A bad actor would be able to put together a single database which combined Twitter handles, email addresses, and phone numbers.

At the time, Twitter admitted that the vulnerability had existed, and subsequently been patched, but said nothing about anyone exploiting it.

Restore Privacy subsequently reported that a hacker had indeed used the vulnerability to obtain personal data from millions of accounts.

A verified Twitter vulnerability from January has been exploited by a threat actor to gain account data allegedly from 5.4 million users. While Twitter has since patched the vulnerability, the database allegedly acquired from this exploit is now being sold on a popular hacking forum, posted earlier today.

5. Did the Germans cheat their election also? Christine Anderson MEP thinks it might have been

Thank you all for paying attention to these issues. Hopefully before these issues pay too too much attention to you.
