Grammys winner Harry Styles accused of ‘white privilege’ in acceptance speech backlash

Normally I would read the headline and think, Ohh, what did he do? Was it…? But the term White Privalige has become so utterly meaningless (if it ever had meaning), that I couldn’t possibly hazard a guess as to what some average artist has done to deserve the monika at the Grammys

Harry Styles’s Grammys speech has sparked a backlash after he claimed “this doesn’t happen to people like me very often” while accepting an award that white men have won 32 times.

Oh. That’s all. Maybe he wasn’t refering to his skin colour. Maybe he meant growing up as an average kid whose parents were office workers?

Styles won the coveted album of the year award as well as best pop vocal album for his third studio album, “Harry’s House”, at the 65th awards show in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The 29-year-old singer appeared shocked to be taking home the biggest award of the night over artists including Beyonce, Lizzo, Adele, Kendrick Lamar and Bad Bunny.

Good Lord! Call me old, but is this what makes up the cream of popular music these days? Beyonce did alright once, but she’s a bit washed up now. Lizzo is that huge fat thing, right? Didn’t know she was a singer, just thought she made money from being fat. Adele is the old x-factor reject that used to be fat, but lost a load of weight and it turned out she wasn’t attractive after all? Kendrick Lamar I’ve never heard of, and I’ve no idea what on Earth a ‘Bad Bunny’ is, but I’m going to go out on a limb and guess some type of black rapper

If that menagerie are the candidates for album of the year, I’ll do what I’ve done for the past 22 years, and not buy any albums

“I think on nights like tonight it’s important for us to remember there is no such thing as ‘best’ in music,” he said.

“I don’t think any of us sit in the studio making decisions on what is going to get us one of these,” he added, holding up the award.

It was the final line of his speech that caused uproar, after he said: “This doesn’t happen to people like me very often and this is so, so nice”.

Uproar? Sounds like a nice speach to me

Social media users were quick to question what Styles, a white male artist and former boy band pop superstar, meant by the comment after edging out women and artists of colour for the award.

He obvously ‘edged out’ people who the selection comittee thought were not as good

As for the rest, maybe he wasn’t refering to his skin colour. Maybe he was talking about having parents who divorced when he was seven and a mother who re-married twice?

Beyonce fans were particularly aggrieved by the snub, the fourth time that the singer has lost out on winning album of the year at the Grammys.

Podcast host Sam Sanders tweeted: “’This doesn’t happen to people like me’ is the most white privilege-iest thing to ever be uttered at an awards show ever for all time”.

As for the white privilage accusation, maybe he wasn’t talking about his skin colour. Maybe he was refering to having a step-father who died of cancer?

Saying ‘this doesn’t happen to people like me very often’ when a black woman hasn’t won that award since 1999 is crazy,” another Twitter user said.

A person like me, does not mean a person with the same skin colour as me. Maybe it means a person who was born into an average family, with typical family woes, but managed to pull themselves up into a life of imense success

White men, including bands and duos fronted by white men, have won nearly half the time, according to an analysis by Insider.

Styles is the 33rd white man to accept the album of the year award.

Nearly half the time? Oh the humanity?

You know what? Maybe Styles was thinking of his skin colour when he made his speach. Maybe he was thinking that he managed to achieve everything he has done, without being on any all black or female shortlists, without being given a leg up or taken on as a diversity hire because he is black, and without being able to cry racist every fucking time a white person who’s worked for it, achieves some recognition?

But the night was not without its success for Beyonce, who made history when her album Renaissance picked up a gong for best dance/electronic album.

Oh well. At least she won something and managed to get through the evening without any controversy
