Mark Hulbert Ringing Warning Bell - Bullish Sentiment Among Financial Newsletters Dangerously High

Mark is very concerned these days that his proprietary reading of Financial Newsletters, the Hulbert Stock Newsletter Sentiment Index (HSNSI), is flashing serious warning signs for market participants. The indicator measures the amount of short term recommended exposure to the stock market among short term market timers. The indicator currently sits at 62.8% up from 13.8% last month. That reading is the highest level since early 2007 when the market was entering the final stages of the cyclical bull market.
The most concerning aspect of the recent reading is the speed in which the indicator has moved from an extreme low reading to a high reading. In that timeframe the stock market has not advanced significantly, causing Hulbert to question the underlying strength of the market advance.
He notes that there has been only one time the indicator was higher than the current reading, that was January of 2010 just before the markets embarked on a 9% decline.
He notes that the quick swing to extreme short term bullishness indicates market risks are elevated.
