Amazon’s Integration with Facebook is Scary

If you hate Facebook’s bravado when it comes to scraping your personal information, you’re going to get the goose bumps from Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) new integration with Facebook. (See “Mark Zuckerberg to Facebook Users: F You, Suckers.“)
Now that Facebook is valued at over $50 billion, they need a lot more revenue per user to justify the rich valuation. So guess what they’re up to: if any of your Facebook friends choose to integrate their accounts on Amazon, Amazon can now take your private information to make product suggestions to your Facebook friends.
Sounds harmless, right? Who cares if a Facebook friend buys a copy of The Social Network because I have information on my Facebook page indicating the movie is worth a few hours of your precious lifespan?
It’s not that simple. Apparently the Amazon algorithm will make suggestions based on information they scrape from your Facebook account. That means you don’t actually have to specifically have a book or movie listed on your book or movie list. It means they are profiling you and then spitting out all types of things people like you would most likely recommend.
Here’s the scary part. Imagine you are a deep thinker and question things like the mainstream media. Do you want your friends or colleagues thinking you’re recommending conspiracy theory books? Let’s say you love E! and talk a lot about entertainment. Would you want people to see a recommendation for Playboy (NYSE:PLA) magazine?
You get the point. The new Amazon integration into Facebook takes away your control over how others will perceive you. Not in the usual sense of “people will perceive us how they choose,” but more in a “Amazon and Facebook are now projecting certain perceptions about me to the public — and they might be complete misrepresentations.” If the new system is implemented poorly, I smell lawsuits on the horizon.
We’ll probably have to wait only another few weeks until Facebook announces their next scheme to monetize our private life. Until then, maybe The Social Network David Fincher can get Kevin Spacey to play Jeff Bezos in the movie The eCommerce Platform.
