If You Don’t Have Passion, Everyone Will Know It

Today I am in Madison, Wisconsin at the Early Stage Startup Symposium.  I love Madison.  If you haven’t been here, it’s a great town.  The US largest farmers market is here.

But there is a lot of innovation here too.

At lunch today, I heard a presentation by Mark Schmitz of Zebradog.  It was one of the best presentations I had heard in a long time.  I hope he uploads the slides to an internet site so everyone can look at them.

I tweeted out some of the stuff.  He started with some data.  75% of the worlds purchasing power lies outside the US, yet only 1% of US business exports goods!  Government isn’t going to help small business-but the internet can.

Ask yourself, What is your core message?  What are your core truths?  People that become your customers won’t remember what caused them to feel the way they feel, but they will remember the feeling. If you intertwine your core message, truth, and your company’s passion in your branding, they will remember you.

Because of the internet, everyday you wake up, you can accomplish absolutely anything from where you are RIGHT NOW.

That’s a big thought.  The big thought has six phases.

1. Enthusiasm

2. Disillusion

3.  Panic

4.  Search for the Guilty

5.  Punishment of the Innocent

6.  Thanks to Everyone NOT involved!

Most of all, you must have passion for what you are doing.  You must sell why you do what you do.  Customers buy with emotion, even engineers.
