BioLargo inks pact with BKT Company and South Korea's City of Daegu to explore water technologies

BioLargo Inc (OTCMKTS:BLGO) said Thursday that it has formed a strategic alliance with BKT Company Limited, including its US subsidiary Tomorrow Water, and the City of Daegu in South Korea to explore opportunities for the company’s technologies in the Asian country’s water and wastewater industry.  

In a statement, the US company said the alliance’s initial focus would lie in getting South Korea’s wastewater treatment industry to utilize BioLargo’s CupriDyne Clean Industrial Odor and VOC Eliminator.

It noted that Daegu’s mayor Kwon Young-jin was present at the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the parties at the three-day WEFTEC conference, in Chicago, which ended on Wednesday.

BKT Company, is a major wastewater treatment solutions provider in South Korea and Vietnam, and Daegu – South Korea’s fourth largest city - is developing a regional water innovation cluster aimed at fostering new disruptive technologies in the country for Asia’s water industry.

Westminster, California-based BioLargo has developed several innovative and patented products targeted at three markets: water and wastewater treatment, industrial odor and volatile organic compounds (VOC) elimination, and advanced wound care.

BioLargo’s Odor-No-More division’s main product is CupriDyne Clean Industrial Odor and VOC Eliminator, which is aimed at the solid waste/landfill/compost, wastewater and oil & gas industries. The product eliminates odor-causing compounds rather than masking them.

Selective about picking the right regional partner

Joseph Provenzano, the president of Odor-No-More commented: “The strategic alliance is a result of successful trials managing odors in hog production and livestock wastewater facilities, BKT’s testing of our product at their Korean facilities, and their recognition of CupriDyne Clean’s potential to solve odor and VOC control challenges in an affordable, environmentally friendly way.”  

BioLargo boss Dennis P Calvert said that BioLargo was selective about picking the right regional partner. “Although South Korea and Asia is an enormous opportunity for our technology, we want to be very careful with whom we choose to partner in that market. BKT has an unparalleled reputation in Korea and the confidence of the City of Daegu,” said Calvert.

Meanwhile, Tomorrow Water CEO Dong Woo Kim said the company was excited to introduce a “safe and environmentally friendly” odor control product into the Korean market.

“There is also the potential for us to introduce BioLargo’s Advanced Oxidation System (AOS) into Korea’s wastewater treatment industry by utilizing the experience and network that BKT has. We see lots of collaboration potential between the two entities,” said Kim.

The BioLargo Water division develops the Advanced Oxidation System (AOS), a disruptive industrial water treatment technology designed to eliminate waterborne pathogens and recalcitrant contaminants with better energy-efficiency and lower operational costs than current technologies.

The BioLargo Engineering division piggybacks on BioLargo Water by offering consulting and engineering services for the water and wastewater treatment industries.
