American Manganese prepares cathode precursor for production testing as part of lithium-ion battery recycling process

American Manganese Inc (CVE:AMY) (OTCQB:AMYZF) (FRA:2AM) has announced a new step forward towards commercializing its proprietary lithium-ion battery cathode recycling process, RecycLiCo.

The Canadian company and its R&D contractor Kemetco Research Inc said that the pregnant leach solution produced from the cathode waste was prepared for cathode precursor production testing.

The lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) testing follows earlier production of cathode precursor material from recycled lithium-nickel-cobalt-aluminum oxide (NCA) cathode waste, according to the Vancouver-based firm.

American Manganese is hoping to prove the potential of recycled NMC or NCA cathode waste for use in new lithium-ion batteries.

“The cathode precursor is a high-value product near the end of the lithium-ion battery supply chain and the NMC and NCA cathodes are two of the most popular electric vehicle battery chemistries manufactured and used today,” said Larry Reaugh, CEO of American Manganese in a statement.

“Therefore, with RecycLiCo, our strategy is to license or jointly develop our environmentally safe, efficient, and low-cost process alongside lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle partners that share our vision of a circular economy.”

American Manganese also reported that equipment and sourcing for the RecycLiCo demonstration plant is underway. The $2.7 million scale-up project will allow the plant to have a cathode waste processing capacity of 500 kilograms per day.

RecycLiCo offers a closed-loop and environmentally friendly solution to recycle cathode materials used in lithium-ion batteries, such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and aluminum.
