Quilling paper art is a popular form of artwork that evolved mostly in the 15th century. Handmade paper art has been resented in the last couple of years. Whether it’s scrapbooks, invitation cards, or accessories, paper art is everywhere. In this blog, we will explore the art of quilling paper and tips and tricks to get started. Stay engaged to learn more.

What is Paper Quilling Art?

Paper quilling, sometimes referred to as paper filigree, is a type of art in which beautiful shapes are created by rolling, shaping, and attaching paper strips. It is a simple artwork that a beginner can easily master. Paper quilling art is used in decor items like gift bags, picture frames, popular earrings, cards, and boxes.

To create elaborate designs, quilling artwork is the process of coiling, curling, twisting, and other modifications of thin paper strips. These patterns might be minimalistic or intricate and complicated compositions. The paper strips, which range in width from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch, can be any color or texture, which increases the art form’s adaptability and inventiveness.

The fact that paper quilling just needs a few supplies—paper strips, a tool for quilling, glue, and a surface to be performed on—makes it an attractive craft. Paper quilling is a terrific method to make personalized gifts and decorations, besides being a fun hobby.

Getting Started With Paper Quilling Art

Starting to create artwork using quilling can be an enjoyable experience. The following are the lists of materials you will need to get started as a beginner:

  • Paper Sheets: You can use colored paper for quilling or buy pre-cut strips. The width of strips usually varies from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch.
  • Quilling Tool: To roll the paper strips, use a needle tool or a slotted quilling tool.
  • Glue: For accurate application, a fine-tip glue bottle works best.
  • Tweezers: Handy for managing tiny and fragile parts.
  • Quilling Board: Helps in uniformly sizing and shaping coils.
  • A Pinwheel and a Corkboard: To keep parts in position while the adhesive dries.
  • Scissors: To cut and trim strips of paper.

Basic Techniques Used for Quilling

Here are some basic techniques of paper quilling:

  • Prepare the Strip:

To begin, take a strip of quilling paper and make sure it is the right width and length for your work.

  • Place End of Paper Strip into Tool:

If using a quilling tool with slots, place one end of the paper strip into the slot. Using your thumb, press the end of the strip against the needle when using a needle tool.

  • Roll the Paper:

Rotate the implement so that the paper strip is firmly wound around the tip. To guarantee a consistent coil, maintain an even tension. A slotted tool holds the paper in position while you roll, so it might be easier for beginners to use.

  • Form the Coil:

After the strip is completely rolled, remove it from the tool with caution, being sure to keep its shape. For an open coil, let the coil loosen slightly; for a closed coil, maintain it tight.

  • Pinch for Shapes:

The coil can be bent into a variety of shapes by pinching it after coiling.

  • Teardrop:

To make a pointed end, pinch one edge of the coil. Pinch the coil’s two opposite sides to form a marquise (eye) shape.

  • Square:

To create a square, squeeze each of the four sides and gently flatten the coil.

  • Triangle:

To create a triangle, pinch three spots around the coil.

  • Different Forms:

Try other shapes, such as half-moons, ovals, and diamonds, and create your personalized DIY art kit, by experimenting with different pinching methods and angles.

  • Fasten the End:

After shaping the coil, fasten the free end of the paper strip with a tiny dab of glue. For accuracy, use a glue bottle with a fine tip.

  • Hold in Place:

To make the bonded end sticks, hold it there for a few seconds. When working with small or complex shapes, you can use tweezers or a pin for this purpose.

  • Design Layout:

Before you glue, arrange the shapes on the project surface to plan your design. This enables you to try out various arrangements and make sure the composition as a whole pleases you.

  • Apply Glue:

Depending on your design, apply a small quantity of glue to the edge or bottom of each form.

  • Position and Hold:

Put each shape on the surface of your product and lightly press to make sure it sticks. For exact positioning, particularly with small or delicate parts, use tweezers.

  • Allow to Dry:

Let the glue dry fully before handling the completed artwork to ensure all the components are firmly connected.

These fundamental skills will enable you to produce a variety of quilling designs, from straightforward motifs to complex patterns. As you gain confidence in these fundamental abilities, you can try out more advanced methods and challenging tasks.
