Like most parents of preschool-aged kids, I find it challenging at times to keep my littles engaged. After all, small people don’t always have the biggest attention spans, and they tend to get bored easily. In my home, this usually doesn’t end well and Sophie and Xander end up fighting. Though they’re the best of friends, they certainly do bicker and fight a lot. Gotta love having kids a mere 12 months apart!

While they’re often associated with wooden dramatic play furniture like the Dress Up Storage Center I featured in November, they also manufacture some great hands-on toys! 

Guidecraft PowerClix are actually pretty awesome, in my humble opinion. These are magnetic building sets that allow kids to not only build various geometric shapes and “buildings”, it also teaches kids about science and the laws of attraction. These sets are ideal for in home use, but they’d also be a fantastic addition to any daycare or preschool. PowerClix sets come in different sizes, too! 

First things first: I know that kids’ magnetic toys have been getting a lot of media attention lately. So naturally, you might be worried about any sort of hazards involved. Let me assure you, Guidecraft PowerClix are very well made and the magnets themselves are not accessible to curious little hands. I even caught my pupple, Trouble, trying to chew one and she did not break the piece and none of the magnets were exposed. (Yes, I really do have a dog named Trouble. She is a spunky Yorkie, and she lives up to her name!) 

We received the 18 piece PowerClix set. As you can see, there are various shapes and all of the pieces have fun, vibrant colors. My kids had a great time identifying shapes and telling me which colors they could find. (Yes, in addition to being a building set, these are also a  great teaching tool!) 

Sophie and Xander were pretty amazed by the fact that these toys are magnetic. They giggled and clapped as the pieces stuck together like magic. One of their favorite things to do with their PowerClix is make a long “chain” with them. 

Even my 13 year old Kyle thinks PowerClix are really neat. He built this cute little house using just a few of the 18 pieces! And I think he earned the “Cool Big Brother Award” in the process. Sophie and Xander were totally in awe of their teenage brother when he built a recognizable structure with these fun, magnetic toys! 

Overall, we are definitely loving this product. Sometimes simple is better than flashing lights and electronic sounds. Guidecraft PowerClix allow kids to create and explore using a bit of science and a lot of imagination.
