Here in the Cleveland, Ohio area, we’ve been having a bit of a heat wave. It’s been hot and sticky, and there have even been some pretty wicked storms, one of which caused a tree to fall on the roof of my garage, destroying it a couple of days ago.  Thank goodness for good homeowner’s insurance! That’s a different post entirely, though. 

To help beat the heat, we’ve been enjoying a lot of icy cold treats lately. From ice pops to ice cream, if it’s hot, chances are my kids are covered in their sticky remnants. It’s summer, after all. If the kiddos want ice cream, they shall have ice cream! 

Speaking of ice cream, did you know that July 17th is National Ice Cream Day? I had absolutely no idea ice cream had a day of its own, but I was thrilled to find out that it does. In my home, we like any excuse we can find to enjoy ice cream together!

This year, we’re celebrating National Ice Cream Day a little early. Just to get some practice in before the official day. We wouldn’t want to fudge it up, no pun intended. Okay. I’m lying. We just wanted ice cream, and it’s hot as Hades outside. We’ll just make sure we celebrate ice cream twice. 

Today, I treated the kiddos to something extra-special, and I even let them help! We had Root Beer Floats, which gave me the perfect opportunity to try out my Curious Chef Root Beer Float Mug Set.

Haven’t heard of Curious Chef? They’re awesome! This brand makes REAL cooking tools, designed with little hands and safety in mind. They have cookie cutters, baking and decorating sets, and even a 30-Piece complete caddy, full of whisks, spatulas, and other must have kitchen gadgets. These products are all BPA-free, and are totally safe for your little chefs to use. 

We took our Root Beer Float Party out to the deck. Sophie and Xander tend to be a bit on the messy side, so I decided to take the potential mess outdoors. I’d rather wipe down the patio table than have to shampoo carpets and scrub walls. I’m sure a lot of you can relate! 

Sophie and Xander were super-excited that they were allowed to help assemble the Root Beer Floats. Our other mugs are glass, and we usually don’t allow the kids to handle them. Thanks to the Curious Chef Root Beer Float Mug Set, there were no worries about breaking anything. These mugs are generously sized at 20oz., yet small enough for kids to easily handle. They also feature an easy to grip handle. Absolutely genius, folks. 

In addition to being totally kid-friendly, these BPA-Free mugs are also dishwasher safe for easy clean-up. 

Okay, so on to the Root Beer Floats. They’re SUPER simple to make, and the perfect way to include kids in the kitchen. 

Here’s what you’ll need:

• Root Beer 
• Vanilla Ice Cream
• Whipped Cream topping (optional) 
• Cherries (optional) 

To make the floats, just scoop some ice cream into each mug. I have an ice cream scoop, but I couldn’t find it anywhere. My ice cream was soft enough that a spoon did the trick quite nicely. But if you have a scoop, definitely use one. 

Once your ice cream is in your mugs, slowly pour some root beer overtop. It will bubble and fizz quite a bit, so going S-L-O-W-L-Y is important if you want to avoid a volcanic mess. 

Next, squirt some whipped cream topping onto the top of the drinks. Use a little or use a lot, depending on how much topping you like. My kids like a LOT. 

Top with a pitted or Maraschino cheery, and serve. 

All 3 of my kiddos loved making Root Beer Floats out on the deck. Even my 16 year old, and he NEVER wants to do anything with his little brother and sister. Never. He’s way too cool to hang out with little people, unless there’s ice cream involved! 

Sophie and Xander loved being able to spend some time with their big brother, too. 

They were also thrilled to have helped make their very own Root Beer Floats! They felt so accomplished since they scooped, poured, and topped, all by themselves. I think we may have some future chefs on our hands. They love helping prepare food and drink, and it seems they both have an interest in cooking in general! 

​We had a great time at our impromptu National Ice Cream Day Root Beer Float party. Not only did we get some practice for the REAL National Ice Cream Day, which is July 17th, the kids also got to help make our icy cold summer treats. My favorite part, of course, is the memories that were made.
