How to Make Low Acid Coffee
Coffee is a great drink that has stimulating and several health benefits. However, coffee has some irritating effects such as making you unfocused and jittery and staining your teeth. Coffee also has an acidic characteristic that may cause stomach troubles. If you have experienced these effects before, you can avoid them by brew a low acid coffee.
Cold brewing is one of the most popular processes of making low acid coffee. You can choose to make either iced or hot coffee.
Method1: Cold extraction
Step 1: Grind coarse coffee ground
Just like French Press brewing, cold brewing requires extended steep of the coffee grounds. Using coarse coffee grounds allows you to get a balanced flavor from your coffee. If you have a coffee maker with grinder, you will need to set coarse grind setting.
Step 2: Add the ground coffee into a glass jar with water
When your coffee ground is ready, scoop about 80 ml and place it into a jar. Next, fill the glass jar with water. Ensure the coffee is at room temperature (68 – 70 degrees Fahrenheit). Stir the ground to achieve a thoroughly saturated mixture.
Step 3: Let the mixture rest for about 12 hours
After achieving a saturated mixture, leave it to steep for approximately 12 hours at room temperature. Remember to cover the jar with a lid to make the steeping process effective. The steeping allows for slow extraction which ensures you achieve rich, smooth coffee that has 70% less acid yet it is not hot.
Step 4: Remove the coffee ground by straining the mixture through a coffee filter
In this step, you have to separate the coffee ground and cold brew. Pour the mixture of coffee grounds and cold brew through a coffee filter placed over a coffee pot pitcher. You can store your cold brew in the refrigerator for later brewing.
Step 5: Make iced coffee with the low acid coffee concentrate
You can now make iced coffee with the low acid coffee concentrate. Just mix equal amount of coffee concentrate and cold water in a glass. Add ice to your glass and your preferred sweeteners and milk.
Step 6: Make hot coffee using your low acid concentrate
You can also make hot coffee using your low acid batch. You only need to add equal volumes of the coffee concentrate and boiling water into a cup or jar. This process will produce a cup of coffee that is not very strong and acidic.
Method2: Use an egg to make low acid coffee
Another method of making low acid coffee is through adding an egg into your coffee at the grinding stage. However, the use of an egg will yield “Swedish coffee”. Including an egg into the coffee grounds makes your coffee less acidic and doesn’t leave an “eggy” flavor in your coffee.
The shell of an egg contains calcium which neutralizes the acidity in your coffee. An egg also clarifies your coffee flavor making it smoother. You coffee will be lighter and clearer than your normal coffee. However, your coffee will not be watery or weak.
