As he discovers what is “him,” Booker said is now interested in the idea of pursuing “food doulaship,” or using farming to help people tackle lifestyle changes from pregnancy, health problems, dietary restrictions or trying to be a vegetarian.

Booker, 28, describes himself as a self-taught urban farming educator. He manages Badger Rock Neighborhood Center on Madison’s south side, helping small businesses coordinate workshops. He also works with the Madison caterer Pasture and Plenty on its virtual “Black Excellence” cooking classes.
Outside of work, the Madison native experiments with colorful crops like purple green beans, yellow watermelon and pastel rainbow eggs. He operates gardens on the city’s west side and at Firm Footing Farm in Black Earth.
Through his different roles, Booker said he is striving to build a stronger sense of community and connection in his hometown. But in recent years, he also increasingly questions whether his hometown can satisfy his dreams of learning from people who look like him.
He wants to travel and find throughlines of the Black diaspora with food and culture.
“I’m always open to being in Wisconsin, but I do think a part of that is me leaving and having those experiences and maybe coming back and sharing it,” he said.
