Fundraiser To Help Longtime NTEB Reader And US Navy Veteran Rob Beaty Pay Medical Bills From His Colon Cancer Diagnosis And Treatment

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

On April 25th of this year I was diagnosed with colon cancer. Being a US Navy Veteran, 1976-80 and the sole proprietor of a small furniture restoration business, “Fine Finishes” I find it economical to use the Veterans Administration for my health care needs.

US Navy vet Rob Beaty is a longtime NTEB reader, and when we heard that he had been diagnosed with colon cancer and was struggling to pay bills, we wanted to help. I have always believed personally that God works through His people, the Body of Christ, to take care of the member of that body.

“I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed.” Psalm 37:25,26 (KJV)

So I am asking you to 1). pray for Rob as he goes through this challenging time, and 2). pray and ask the Lord if you should donate to this fundraiser, we pray that you do. (Neither NTEB nor myself personally have any financial interest of any kind in this effort.)

We thank you in advance for whatever your contribution will be, here now is Rob’s story.

ROB’S STORY: I joined the Navy three months after graduating Joppatowne High School, Joppa Maryland in 1976. They sent me to boot camp at Great Lake NTC during the coldest winter anyone could remember. How’s -83 degrees w/wind chill sound? In February 1977 upon graduation I flew to sunny San Diego CA where I was stationed aboard the USS Dixie, AD-14 and worked as a Boatswain’s Mate until after a yard period in 78 when I transferred to Operations Department to become a Quartermaster (navigator). That job was more fitting having grown up on the Chesapeake Bay as a kid.

Late in 1979 we were scheduled to go overseas to the Philippines, Japan and Hong Kong  but as luck would have it, hours before we pulled out of San Diego the hostages were taken in Iran starting the “Iranian Hostage Crisis”.

I’ve always been in good health so long term care was never an issue until now. I will be needing surgery to remove the cancer which means they will be removing part of my colon and from what I’m told, part of my rectum. Afterward I will not be allowed to move furniture or lift heavy objects for about 6 weeks, maybe more. What that means is I won’t have any income. I don’t carry insurance for my care or have any surviving family that might be of financial assistance. The poor economy of years past didn’t do my credit any favors either so I have nothing to fall back on.

After leaving the Navy that September while in port at Oakland Alameda I came home to Baltimore where after a couple years of odd jobs I found my ultimate job repairing and restoring old furniture. I was a natural and loved going to work. I worked for couple different companies over the years, always the head finisher, before I was offered to buy a friends refinishing business which I bought in 1998. I’m still at it after 37 years and now have a workshop in the backyard of my home. I’ve weathered some hard times in recent years, sometimes just barely paying the bills. Then just when it seems like the economy has turned around and I’m paying down the debt I incurred over the past few years I get diagnosed with colon cancer back on April 25th.

At the time of my diagnosis I was doing quite a bit of work for a company in Alexandria Va who when I informed them of my situation, pulled the rug out from under me and stopped using my services. This has left me with very little work. I’m doing my best to obtain work but I just lost 80% of my business at a time I need it most. This hasn’t helped.

God Bless and Thank You,  Rob
