Sustainable travel is starting to catch the attention of some of the world’s most imaginative inventors. Designing the airplanes of tomorrow is no longer just about sleek aesthetic design. The engineers at Airbus presented their vision for the future of sustainable travel at the Farnborough International Air Show earlier this year. As the engineers unveiled their creation, spectators soon found that with Airbus Concept Plan, there is more than meets the eye.

The proposed airplane will provide a brand new platform for sustainable travel. Travelers aboard the engineer’s dream plane will be seated on ecologically conserved seats. The self- cleansing seats will be constructed to not only conform to the passenger’s unique shape, but they will also aid in preventing discomfort caused by turbulence. So long gone will be the days of constantly shifting to find the perfect fit for a comfortable flight. The seats’ innovative design and sustainably produced materials will do all the work for the passenger. And speaking of passengers, forward-thinking engineers are hoping to use the body heat from passengers on the yet-to-be-made aircraft to be channeled into onboard systems by way of heat exchangers. By using the arguably sustainable body heat of passengers to generate heat, fuel production and cost could be decreased dramatically. Sustainable travel never sounded so effortless.

Some scientific commentators suspect that technological advances will allow passengers to see the ground below while traveling thousands of feet above the tallest cumulonimbus clouds. For those of us who prefer the comfort of seeing the ground while suspended thousands of feet into thin air, this feature is especially appealing. Another noteworthy feature that makes this airbus a delight for sustainable travel is material composition of the airbus. Regardless of all of its luxurious features, the airbus will considerably lighter than most planes of our modern time, allowing for an even more efficient fuel capacity. The aerodynamics features of the futuristic airbus include a slimmer overall shape, semi- embedded engines, trim wings, and a U-shaped tail. These design modification will provide the perfect aerodynamics for an improved environmental performance.

The environmental technologies sound like something out of the Jetsons, but the great news is that this plane is a realistic concept that could become reality as soon as the year 2050. The engineers were careful to present the Airbus Concept Plan in a way that is actually attainable, not just a figment of over- zealous engineers’ imaginations. In fact, some of the technology necessary for the creation of the Airbus Concept Plane already exists.

Technology geeks are always proposing technologically advanced ways of achieving sustainable travel and living. However, the Airbus Concept Plan seems to go one step further. Instead of seeing technology as a catalyst for sustainable living, the futuristic airbus marries the concept of technology and conservation. Innovative thinking paired with technological possibilities makes concepts like using the body heat of passengers to fuel the plane intellectually attainable. If more engineers begin to think this way, we can all look forward to a more sustainable future.
