February 2018 Beach Trash Numbers

This is really late, but it has been crazy and rainy, plus I had to deal with family matters that took up alot of time. I am also using Clean Swell app and lost so much data. Pulling a wagon, wearing gloves, taking my cell phone in and out, holding a flashlight, afraid of losing my phone instead I lost data. I was able to record was a total of 3071 pieces of beach trash in 9 days and about 18 hours. That equates to 171 pieces of litter per hour. If I use the step app, it equates to 3.9 pieces of litter per step. That is sick!

Because I start in the dark, I miss about 50% of all the litter on the tide line and I do not pick up everything. The beach cleaners start at 4:30 am and when they are sifting the sand or raking into the ocean, you can’t even imagine what they pick up. When it gets lighter outside, will take pictures of what is in the hopper.

Of note, most of the personal hygiene are dirty diapers. In the Belmont Park parking lot, it is averaging 2 per day. Today someone took a dump on a foam take out container and left it on the boardwalk. I did pick it up, but did not take a picture. Disgusting!

Sugary drinks.. I don’t know the split, plastic water bottles are maybe 60% and sugary drinks about 35% and the rest is a mixture of non-refundable bottles like orange juice.

Of noted savings were the 7.5 Gallons of water saved from plastic water bottles. It takes 3x as much water to make 1 bottle of water. Ergo I saved 22.5 Gallons of water to be reused in my garden. If I ever get really organized I could track the amount of wasted sugary drinks and sodas left on the beach. It is easily one gallon per day. According to quora: It can take as much as 132 gallons of water to make a 2-liter bottle of soda. I do not reuse the soda!

Even through I haven’t officially started my beach trash living (April 1) It all come down to how much money can be made from the litter. My last recycling run netted $17.00 minus the $2.00 tip. It could have been more, but I give away much of recyclables to those who do not have homes. My next Beach Trash Sale is coming up in April, hopefully will get money!
