An empty yacht, with the engine was still running and its lights still on, washed up ashore in the Madeira Beach area yesterday around 1pm EST.

From CNN:

The Coast Guard sent out two rescue vessels and a helicopter but was not able to locate anybody.

Adding to the mystery is the fact that the vessel is registered to the federal government, CNN-affiliate WFTS reported.

Deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s office are investigating the incident and trying to track down the owner of the boat.

I read that and copied to doc yhis morning, you think has something to do with the oil ?? Yacht with no one aboard mysteriously washes ashore on Redington Beach (VIDEO)
REDINGTON BEACH — About noon Wednesday, Gene Borg was sitting at his table, eating a bowl of cereal and fruit.
Out in the gulf, something caught his eye.
Amid crashing waves and a high tide, a 48-foot yacht was creeping toward shore.
The boat crawled through the churning waters, perpendicular to a stretch of beach near Gulf Boulevard and 158th Avenue. It passed buoys marked for swimming.
“I’m thinking hey, he’s getting kind of close. I thought, he’s got to turn,” said Borg, 68. “But it didn’t turn. It just came straight… Read more…

The OWNER is on VACATION(again), playing golf.

Update: no mention in latest news report of the boat being owned by the U.S. government. /story/152/689/Mystery_Yacht_-_More_Questions_Than_Answers_So_Far.html

The Yacht is not owned by the government.

Here is my Q&A with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s office:
      Q) What caused the Sheriff’s office to tell WFTS that the yacht was owned by the federal government?

      A) We never made any such statements. See our news release at http://www.pcsoweb.com.

      Q) At what point did your office determine this was not correct?

      A) Again we never any such statements.

      Q) What caused the Sheriff’s office to make further inquiries into the boat’s owner if the owner had been determined to be the federal government?

      A) I think you are confusing the fact that it is a United States documented vessel, but that does not mean the government owns the vessel. It’s a form of federal registration.

Shows you how important wording is. The original WFTS story said the vessel was “registered to” the federal government. If they had said, “registered with” there probably would not have been the confusion.

Pinellas County is on the Gulf of Mexico by Tampa, MacDill Airforce Base (which is accessible by water). I would say the probability of the passengers on a government chartered yacht being airlifted or transferred to another vessel (or undisclosed location) is reasonable. If their identities are classified, the passenger list may have been fabricated for security reasons, which means the names would check out clean in the Pinellas County database and more than likely they would register the fake identities as missing persons. This may also suggest the yacht may have come from a undisclosed island or location near by, that it had fuel, its engine was still running and the lights were on. That the chartered vessel was not stolen, it would rule out piracy, which means it was more than likely simply released from the undisclosed location as a means of disposal.

Its owner is one Arturo Millet Reyes, who reported the boat stolen from Cancun a few days ago. He also owns the Yucatan soccer team Merida F.C.

According to the article, “Makin’ Waves” had an expired Florida registration but a current Delaware registration. The CNN story claiming the yacht was registered to the U.S. Government is evidently incorrect.
