Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, which makes it beneficial to the body. However, if you are over-exposed to sunlight, radiation will cause you dozens of health trouble such as skin diseases or even a heat stroke.
A notable risk of getting too much sunlight exposure is eye trouble. Yes, our eyes can be badly damaged if regularly exposed to too much ultraviolet radiation which the sun emits. Vision problems, blindness and cataracts are possible risks.

You probably noticed an old issue with regards to eye problems, and that is the true relationship between sunlight and eye cataracts. Can sunlight really cause cataracts? Let us find out.

What is Cataract

Cataract is the shadowing of eye lenses, forcing vision difficulty. This shadows or clouds occur, when the proteins within the eye lens begin to attract to each other, forming a “cloud” that leads to blocking of vision.
This eye problem is a serious vision threat, which could lead to blindness if ignored and not treated immediately.
Cataracts usually occurs during middle age, usually 40 years of age and up. With today’s advanced medical technology, this type of eye issue has been clinically studied and can now be corrected through surgery.
So what are the factors that help form eye cataracts?

Causes of Cataracts

MedLine Plus published a detailed report about the different causes of eye cataracts. The most common cause would be either age or family history. Aside from that two popular causes, below are other causes that you should watch for yourself.
  • eye injury
  • eye inflammation
  • diabetes
  • long-term use of corticosteroids
  • different eye problems
  • radiation exposure
  • smoking
However, there are instances were people under the age of 40 are already suffering from this eye disease. Why is that? Well, there are many reasons why diseases plague human kind and this includes sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet and the environment all plays big roles why people suffer from cataracts.
One big factor is sunlight exposure or ultraviolet radiation.

Facts about Cataracts and Ultraviolet Light

There is a bigger chance of an eye damage if you are over-exposed to sunlight. Over-exposure can be acquire through your work, driving at daylight without protective sunglasses or directly looking at the sun.
This PDF file, shows a clinical study report about the harmful effects of UV rays to our eyes. The ultraviolet radiation in sunlight can easily damage your eye tissues and may cause vision impairment or any eye disorders.
The longer you are exposed to UV rays, the higher the chances of cataracts to form. The cornea and other eye parts will absorb this radiation, causing these parts to suffer burn damage which is similar to sunlight’s effects on skin (skin burn).
Plus, UV exposure is said to be cumulative in nature. This means that the effects of sun’s radiation won’t surface quickly right after the exposure, but the effects could be triggered depending on long-term radiation exposure. This is the reason why outdoor workers are the ones who are getting eye cataracts most of the time because they are exposed heavily to UV rays.

Prevention and Treatment of Cataracts

Early stages of eye cataracts can be corrected through better eyeglasses. However, if the symptoms are getting worse, you should contact your eye doctor immediately. Your physician may require you to have a surgery to remove the cataract.
If your eyes are still healthy, you better plan a contingency plan to avoid any eye problems in the future. The tips below will help avoid cataract formation especially if you are working outdoor.
  • avoid too much face washing as this can cause eye stress
  • wear sunglasses when going out in the morning
  • eat healthy foods especially those rich in vitamin A
  • exercise regularly to keep your blood circulating
  • stay away from deadly sports such as boxing or MMA
  • wear eye protections if necessary

Conclusion

Avoiding too much sunlight can help prevent cataract formation and any other diseases. Make sure that you do all these tips so that you can live healthy and keep your vision intact even as you age.
