Sweet wormwood: 1,000 times more effective than chemotherapy for breast cancer

A recent study found that sweet wormwood can kill up to 12,000 cancer cells for every one healthy cell it may affect.

Sweet wormwood targets cancer cells through multiple pathways

First of all, although sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua) is related to the herb that is the main ingredient in absenthe, that green-colored liquor that’s popular in Europe, it is not the same thing. The active ingredient that makes sweet wormwood (known as sweet annie, sweet sagewort, annual mugwort or annual wormwood in North American) such a cancer-healer is artemisinin. Chinese medicine practitioners and others have used it for thousands of years to treat everything from inhibiting parasite growth to immune boosting.

Sweet wormwood is also chock-full of powerful, cancer-killing terpenes such as limonene and B-pinene and the flavonoid quercetin, all of which contain anti-inflammatory, immune-supporting, and anti-cancer properties. In addition, sweet wormwood contains the flavonoids luteolin and patuletin, sesquiterpenes such as camphor and myrcene and palmitic acid, a good source of saturated fat and promoter of enzyme health.

Groundbreaking cancer discovery by University of Washington researchers

International studies have sadly found that the carpet-bombing approach that typical chemotherapy employs accounts for only 2% of the 5-year survival rates overall, researchers at the University of Washington have discovered that a special super-concentrated compound of sweet wormwood and iron can be over a thousand times more effective than chemo at targeting cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone. The compound appears to especially be effective in combating breast cancer.

Developed by bioengineering professor Henry Lai, PhD, wormwood and iron together is said to act as a “trojan horse,” creating a literal “time bomb” for cancer cells. The compound is founded on the fact that cancer cells are not as successful as healthy cells in disposing of free-floating iron molecules. This weakness causes the presence of iron in general to create a stressful environment for them. Lai and his team used naturally-occur holotransferrin, which carries iron into cells, as a way to transfer high doses of artemisinin into breast and prostate cancer cells.

Shocking scientific results will leave most conventionally-trained oncologists speechless

A similar 2015 comprehensive study on the cancer-healing effects of artemisinin conducted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the UK found that, “Artemisinin reacted with iron to form free radicals which cause cell death. The increased iron uptake of cancer cells leaves them susceptible to the free radicals artemisinin creates.”

According to the Washington study report published in the journal Cancer, within 16 hours, all cancer cells exposed to doused holotransferrin perished with 16 hours.

“Most currently available drugs are targeted to specific cancers,” Lai said. “This compound works on a general property of cancer cells, their high iron content.”

Breast cancer cells in particular can sometimes contain up to 15 times more iron receptors than surrounding cells, which is why this iron-artemisinin duo may have an even more profound effect on breast cancer.

The specifics of how best to use sweet wormwood on breast cancer cells, however, is still up for debate. The Worcester report states that “further research of the plant has found that the plant [itself as opposed to just artemisinin extract] may potentially kill cancer cells and behave as an antagonistic agent for estrogen-receptors in breast cancer.”

The Worcester report also found that artemisinin delivered through liposomal nanoparticles, which become more water-soluble as pH decreases, can greatly improve the “anti-proliferative effects of the artemisinin on ER-positive breast cancers.” Lower pH environments are the likeliest places for cancer tumors to grow.

Will this profound research spark a positive change in cancer treatment?

As a side note, the University of Washington study dovetails in general on previous work performed by famed Chinese chemist Tu Youyou, Chief Scientist at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing. Youyou, at age 84, won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Medicine for her research in perfecting artemisinin extraction techniques for combatting reoccurring fever and, eventually, malaria.

The exciting finding by University of Washington researchers provides further proof of the powerful effect of artemisinin on cancer and the powerful effect of combining naturally-occurring herbals with other essentials, such as iron, to combat cancer cell growth. Sweet wormwood in some form is definitely an herbal to add to your overall healthy breast toolbox.
