Three teenagers have been arrested after they assaulted, and coughed at, an elderly couple in Hertfordshire, England. The convictions are likely to appear in their
national police check.
A spokesman for Hertfordshire Police, in an interview with Yahoo News UK, said an elderly couple was walking through Paynes Park in Hitchin when they were approached by three people, one of whom reportedly coughed in their faces.
The situation then escalated after a passer-by intervened to help the elderly couple. According to police testimony, the man, who intervened on behalf of the couple, suffered bruising on his face.
The victim, a woman in her seventies, also suffered bruising on one of her eyes and was taken to a hospital for a check-up.
According to police records, the three boys, aged 16, 18 and 19, assaulted the victim and the passer-by, were arrested and interviewed under suspicion of actual bodily harm, affray and criminal damage before being released under investigation.
Similar incidents took place in Devon and Cornwall, where police say they received a barrage of calls from people reporting individuals deliberately coughing at other individuals in an attempt to frighten them into believing they are infected with the coronavirus. The list of such reported incidents continues to grow all across the U.K. The Grimsby Telegraph published a statement from police and crime historian Mark Rothwell, who described the recent slew of similar incidents as “pathetic behavior.”
“We were talking in a briefing last week, wondering whether we would start to hear stuff like this. I am saddened to learn that it has become a reality,” Rothwell said.
The incidents at Hertfordshire, Devon and Cornwall and West Midlands, all seem to be the latest in a spate of misdemeanors in the U.K. involving individuials who cough and pretend to be sick amid the rising number of coronavirus cases around the world.
This behavior, unfortunately, is not isolated to the United Kingdom.
Here in the United States, police are being called to an increasing number of incidents where coronavirus is mentioned after individuals have coughed and/or spat on store items and other individuals.
A conversation between two customers waiting in a ShopRite check-out line resulted in a 65-year-old New Jersey man being charged with making terroristic threats, simple assault, two counts of bias intimidation and two counts of harassment for a recent incident.
Then there is the bizarre Missouri Walmart incident from March 2020. Twenty-six year old Cody Lee Pfister, and filmed himself licking deodorant containers on one of the shelves. According to the statement of probable cause police later used to secure a warrant for his arrest on making a terrorist threat in the second degree (a felony), Pfister turned to a phone camera and asked, “Who’s scared of coronavirus?”, before sticking out his tongue and “dragging it across approximately ten (10) containers on the shelf and a portion of the shelf itself.” He then shared the video on social media for the world to share his shopping experience.
Even the police are being ‘coronavirus’ threatened as they make arrests. In Alaska, a woman allegedly caught shoplifting told officers she was suffering from the virus, then quickly retracted her story to avoid facing felony charges, while a Florida man pulled over on suspicion of reckless driving allegedly told officers he was suffering from the virus before removing a mask police had given him and beginning to intentionally coughing toward an officer. This action won him the added charge of assault and threatening a public servant.
These are just a few of the many public incidents around the world where the threat of infecting someone with coronavirus can and does result in serious charges from authorities.
