Injuries on the Court: A Look at the Most Common Injuries Faced by NBA Players

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

What is the biggest single factor that could influence the NBA Finals odds? Is it the individual form of players? The tactics and strategies of the varying coaches? The influence of a particularly vociferous home crowd? Nope.

The factor that influences the outcome of tight games more than anything else is more often than not injuries and fitness issues. The Golden State Warriors could well be on the way to overturning a 2-1 game deficit to the Sacramento Kings, but a recurrence of a persistent shoulder injury to Steph Curry would put the brakes on that comeback before it had even begun.

Considering their prevalence and impact, injuries are rarely covered in any real detail in the media, which is why we decided to take a deep dive into the most common injuries suffered by basketball stars as well as details on how they are treated and, most importantly, avoided.

Read on to find out all about basketball’s most common injuries.

Ankle Sprains

The basketball court might not feel small when you’re chasing after a younger, fitter player but in terms of professional sports playing area is relatively small. This congested playing area requires players to run in short, sharp bursts and to carry out far more sharp turns than in other sports.

As a result there is a lot there is a lot of mechanical pressure put on the ankles of top NBA stars. If you think a sprained ankle doesn’t sound too bad then you have obviously never experienced a proper ankle sprain.

Sprains can be agonising and can cause a lot of long-term damage, as such NBA stars routinely go for X-rays whenever they feel the slightest niggle in their ankles. This allows team doctors to analyse the extent of injuries and come up with accurate rehabilitation programmes.

(Everything you need to know about one of the most painful injuries you can get on the court.)

Jammed Fingers

Fingers are to NBA players what a plectrum is to a guitarist or a drill is to a tradesman – without them, they cannot operate at the highest level. Unfortunately as they are so often on the frontline of the action, they often suffer a lot of impact injuries.

Jammed fingers are particularly common amongst NBA players and can cause significant swelling in the joint. To mitigate the risk of jammed fingers, or to reduce pain during games, players will often tape a weak or injured finger to an adjacent healthy one.

Like ankle injuries however, all serious finger injuries are subject to X-ray examinations to ensure that the right rehabilitation strategy is employed.

Knee Injuries

The knee is terrifically versatile but the sharp turning of professional sports is often a hurdle too far for the humble knee. Designed to allow us to bend efficiently and to leverage other muscles, the knee is surprisingly susceptible to injury.

Whenever the knee is not perfectly aligned with the foot, it must rely on ligaments and muscles for stability. When this happens and impact or an acute turn occur, muscles and ligaments can be easily strained or torn.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are a particular bane of professional sports players, not just NBA stars. These once career ending injuries can now be treated more than effectively, with many players returning to action less than a year after suffering them.

The best prevention of knee injuries is to sufficiently strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee, thus reducing the risk of them failing when called into action.

(ACL reconstruction surgery explained.)

Stress Fractures

Have you ever truly stopped and though about just how high a basketball hoop is? The rim on an NBA court is ten foot high, that’s 4 foot 4 taller than the average American male. Were you to fall from that height you would seriously injure yourself.

Now imagine jumping to that height and thundering down onto a basketball court multiple times a game like NBA stars. It’s no wonder then that one of the most common afflictions suffered by professional basketball players is a stress fracture to the lower leg.

These injuries usually occur as a response to overtraining from the excessive strain of multiple falls from great heights. The only way to mitigate against these types of injuries is to come up with robust training programmes that limit the amount of times players impact the ground at speed.

In Summary

There are many things that influence the outcome of a game. More often than not, injuries have played the biggest factor in determining not only the outcome of individual games but also of entire seasons.

It’s important then that NBA stars and their medical team’s do all they can to limit the potentially devastating impacts of serious injuries. Unfortunately though there is no way to eliminate them altogether.
