Explosive Device Detonates in Tangancícuaro Police Station, Michoacan

At approximately 7:00 pm on May 22, 2021, an unidentified person caused an explosive device to detonate at the municipal police station located on Arista street in the town of Tangancícuaro de Arista, Michoacan. Alerta Michoacán’s and MoreliActiva’s early reports indicate a single person entered the police station in a nondescript manner and suddenly threw an explosive device which detonated. Then the individual fled the area. A loud noise was heard, no details on the nature of the explosive device have been released as of today. 

Early media reports indicated that the police station also received gunfire from the unidentified persons; however the official police report states there were simultaneous gunshots in the community of La Antorcha when the explosive device was thrown that were unrelated to this event. 

Members of the Michoacán Police and the National Guard were deployed to the area and began patrolling the town to secure the area.  After the area was secure, investigators from the Specialized Crime Scene Unit (UEEC) arrived at the site in order to process the site. The official police report states there were no deaths or injuries. A State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) van was seen in the vicinity of the police station.
