“MX” and “Sol Prendido” for Borderland Beat; TY to “El Zacatecas”
Tamaulipas state authorities confirmed just a few hours ago that Gulf Cartel faction boss José Alfredo Hernández Campos AKA “El Calamardo” (The Squidward) and/or “Metro 27″ was broken out of custody by cartel members.
The suspect was apprehended on Monday by the Special Forces Group (GOPES), the elite unit of the Tamaulipas State Police, and was scheduled for a court hearing on Wednesday.
According to police sources and eye-witnesses, Hernandez Campos was in custody at the Tamaulipas State Police detention center in Reynosa when armed men wearing military garments went in to release him.
It is believed that the Gulf Cartel carefully planned the operation. When gunmen went to the detention center to release him, others carried out a series of road blockades across Reynosa and dumped tire spikes in several neighborhoods simultaneously. This prevented security forces from swiftly responding to the incident and distracted them.
Local media outlets said that cartel boss Cesar Morfin Morfin AKA “El Primito” reportedly offered up to MXN$1 million (approximately US$50,000) to anyone who helped release Hernandez Campos.

Hernandez Campos is the alleged plaza boss of Diaz Ordaz, a municipality that borders Reynosa on the west. This border town is across the Texas communities of Los Ebanos and La Grulla.
He is wanted for multiple charges, including drug trafficking, human smuggling, kidnapping, attacking law enforcement officers, and taking down surveillance cameras. Citizen journalists stated that El Calamardo lives in Reynosa and reports to cartel boss El Primito, who heads the entire Metros faction in La Frontera Chica border region.
