MICHAEL WALSH In all crises, there are winners and losers with some being hurt more than others. At a time like this, we want to share the burden. But, it can be difficult to do so when the law actually forbids our helping others.

I suppose I can consider myself more fortunate than most. As a writer, I work from home anyway. Being of reclusive nature the thought of being a castaway never really bothered me so the lockdown has hardly impacted on me.

How do we cope with isolation and loneliness? Many, such as prisoners have no choice. Still, convicts are volunteers whilst we are not. Conversely, many will suffer a loss of space and freedom that would not be tolerated in a prison.

The prisoner has an exercise yard much larger than most people’s balconies or gardens. The inmate never has to worry about his rent or upkeep, health concerns, he can mix and dine with others, and likely he can use the library and sports facilities. Bizarrely, we have reached a point of isolation that gives prison a certain appeal.

This is as good a time as any to remember, ‘the best community of all is the one between your ears.’

We all have a gift if we care to identify it. Never forget the power of imagination. With mental imagery, you can create anything you wish for. Let me give you an example.

Recently, my novel, The Souls Meet was published by Amazon. Having enjoyed crafting the characters, Paul and Deborah, having creatively given the mysterious pair their personalities and lives, I feel as though we have now gone our separate ways.

Like the imaginary Italian woodcarver, Geppetto, who made Pinocchio, I too created real people. However, never forget, my two friends are as imaginary as is Pinocchio.

For twenty years, I worked with Britain’s Guild of Master Craftsmen. During those two decades, I was privileged to make the acquaintance of the nation’s most gifted craftsmen and women, most of who worked from home.

Men and women of all ages who created the most wonderful etchings, paintings, sculptured figures, took an interest in say classical music, Greek or Roman history, learned how to play a musical instrument or adapted to a new trade.

Women excelled in various crafts such as dressmaking, confectionary, cooking, learned a language, took up embroidery or made the most exquisite objet de art by learning sewing or crocheting skills. The internet has created a wonderful opportunity to learn new skills or sell one’s services, learned to play a musical instrument.

I think this crisis will soon be over but I imagine that it will leave its mark on us all. Maybe this is the shove we needed to learn to be like our forebears, to work creatively at home without the distractions of the television.
