Now Christian Schools are Rebelling Against California’s Governor

TRUNEWS with RICK WILES Two Christian schools are among a group of religious institutions that are now suing California Gov. Gavin Newsom over his recent order to close schools, citing the coronavirus plandemic. According to court documents, three Jewish schools, and Montebello Christian School and St. Augustine High School are seeking a federal court injunction against the governor’s order. Their complaint states, in part: “Plaintiffs bring this particular suit to advance their rights as religious schools, parents, students, and educators to choose — again, consistent with sound science, data, and their own individual circumstances — to hold in-person religious education in a manner consistent with their faith. “Our laws are clear that government shall make no law abridging the free exercise of religion. Laws that treat religious institutions, including schools, unequally must be narrowly tailored to minimize the burden they place on a fundamental right.” Montebello Christian superintendent Sebastian Petz told a local TV station that not allowing his school to re-open will have a major impact on the surrounding community: “Public schools will always be around. They have state funding. We do not, so if we don’t open our doors, there’s a good chance that we may never be able to serve our low-income, poor, minority families going forward for the rest of our existence.” St. Augustine principal James Horne issued the following statement about the lawsuit: “At Saints, we don’t believe remote learning is sufficient to provide a quality education our students are entitled to and our families have come to expect. We are confident we can open our school safely, consistent with CDC and San Diego County health guidance.” Under Newsom’s order, both public and private schools on any county on the state’s “watch list” must remain closed. Once a county is removed from the list, schools must then wait an additional two weeks before re-opening. Schools that have re-opened are also required to enforce mandatory mask rules and social distancing for students, staff, and faculty. (Photo Credit: St. Augustine High School) www.trunews.com
