U.S. Sends Another Destroyer Through Taiwan Strait

TRUNEWS with RICK WILES For the second time in as many weeks, the U.S. Navy has reportedly sailed one of its warships through the Taiwan Strait in a direct confrontation with China’s territorial claims over the island nation. The Taiwanese National Defense Ministry announced this morning that a unnamed U.S. warship transited the strait and was continuing to sail south into the South China Sea. Without providing any details, Taipei said the ship was on an “ordinary mission” and the situation in the strait was “normal.” Reuters reports the Pentagon has not responded to requests for comment. With both sides stepping up military activities in and around the region, the guided missile destroyer USS Mustin transited the strait on Aug. 18. Late last week, the Mustin also sailed in close proximity to the Paracel Islands, which are claimed by China and several other countries in the region. The Navy’s Pacific Fleet Command said the destroyer’s mission was the “ensure critical shipping lanes in the area remain free and open.” Beijing accused the ship of entering its territorial waters without authorization. It also claimed it had shooed the Mustin away with threats of military force. The Pentagon said the destroyer never left its planned course. In other “new Cold War” headlines we’re following today: • Border Beef – New clashes have occurred between Chinese and Indian soldiers along their heavily contested border in the Himalayas. The Indian Defense Ministry says that a brigade commander-level meeting is now underway to defuse the situation. China’s Defense Ministry has denied Indian allegations that its troops violated the Line of Actual Control in the disputed Ladakh region. • Anchor Locked Up – Well-known and widely respected CGTN anchor Cheng Lei – an Australian national – has been detained by the Chinese government for nearly three weeks, according to Australian television. Although she has received her formal consular visit in custody, neither side has said why she is being detained. Her CGTN biographical website has been scrubbed from the Chinese Internet.
