The Jewish practice of circumcising male children on the eighth day of life, the Shabbat laws, and the ritual prayers are claimed to be the three crucial links between God and Jewish persons.

As the obligation to circumcise babies on the eighth day supersedes the obligation to refrain from work on the Sabbath, Jewish circumcision is the decisive hallmark of Judaism.

In the Bible, non-circumcision is punishable by death for the infant; if up to 90% of the community remained uncircumcised, the penalty was the destruction of the entire community with exceptions, including up to 10% who observed the law all would be killed.

Jewish circumcision including mouth-penis wound sucking is furthermore performed today, e.g. in Lubavitch (Chabad), Satmar, and Bobov communities, particularly in Israel, the USA, and Canada.

In Israel, it is officially recommended by the Chief Rabbinate, and in the USA, by the Rabbinical Council of America and the American Board of Ritual Circumcision, among others.

In the Talmud, Rav Pappa (AD 300-375) says not performing “Metzitza b’ Peh,” is a hazard. Maimonides (1235-1304) said that the performance of Metzitza b’ Peh was an indispensable requirement for mohelim (ritual circumcisers.)
